Dedication
Dedicated to the memory of Keith Amos, MD.
American surgery lost a rising star in June 2013. Dr. Keith Dave Amos was a loving husband to his wife, Ahaji Amos; a loving father to his three daughters, Hunter, Logan, and Daryn; and a caring friend, mentor, and surgeon. This work is dedicated to him.
Keith’s career in academic surgery was an illustrious one marked by numerous honors and distinctions. A native of Minden, Louisiana, Keith matriculated at Xavier University in New Orleans, where he became interested in biomedical research as a Minority Access to Research Careers Scholar.
After graduating from Xavier, Keith attended Harvard Medical School and was selected as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Cloister Fellow. He completed his surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis and a surgical oncology fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina in 2007 and dedicated his career to treating breast cancer and melanoma patients. At the time of his death, Keith was serving as the American College of Surgeons Claude H. Organ Traveling Fellow.
Keith served as an editor for the breast chapter of this book. Besides being a skilled surgeon, Keith was an example of the clinician-investigator. He contributed to numerous publications on topics ranging from preoperative staging of breast cancer patients to education techniques to foster the skills set of graduating medical students. He was very active in the American College of Surgeons and a number of cooperative groups to address issues facing patients with breast cancer and melanoma.
Keith had a positive impact on countless individuals, one too great to adequately describe in this brief remembrance. His untimely death has left multiple charitable organizations, professional societies, and patient advocacy groups without a dedicated friend and supporter. He is deeply missed by his friends, family, students, and patients.
P.vi Following Keith’s death, the University of North Carolina established a remembrance Web site in his honor. The following entry, typical of the hundreds posted, is a testament to Keith’s good character and compassion to serve.
“I didn’t know Dr. Amos very well, and he didn’t know me very well, either. But that didn’t stop him from giving
time from his very busy life to guide and advise me along with many of my classmates. Dr. Amos touched our whole community with his unhesitating generosity with his time and attention, while still enjoying a family life that was the envy of his colleagues. Had he never scrubbed in, picked up a scalpel, or sewn a stitch, he would still have been a great man.”
—University of North Carolina, Senior Medical Student
