BOEING SECURES 102 COMMITMENTS FOR 787-10

Boeing, which announced the launch of its 787-10 Dreamliner at the 2013 Paris Air Show in June, has secured commitments for 102 airplanes from five customers across Europe, Asia and North America, providing a strong foundation to support development and production of the newest Dreamliner.

The new 787-10 will fly up to 7,000 nautical miles (12,964 km) — covering more than 90 percent of the world’s twin-aisle routes — with seating for 300-330 passengers, depending on an airline’s configuration choices. The second member of the family, the 787-9, is in final assembly in Everett, WA, and is set to make its first fight later this year.

“The 787-10 Dreamliner will be the most-efficient jetliner in history. The airplane’s operating economics are unmatched and it has all the incredible passengerpleasing features that set the 787 family apart as truly special,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. “The 787-10 is 25 percent more efficient than airplanes of its size today and more than 10 percent better than anything being offered by the competition for the future.”

“Our ongoing investment in the 787 family is well-founded,” said Conner. “With the 787-10, we’ve designed an exceptional airplane supported by an efficient and integrated production system that can meet increasing demands and create new opportunities for us. Our team and our customers are excited about growing the product line and expanding our presence with this family of airplanes.”

The 787 family’s unique interior offers passengers technologies that make their flights more enjoyable, including large, dimmable windows; cleaner air; higher humidity; lower cabin altitude; bigger stowage bins; soothing LED lighting and a smoother ride. The 787-10 will share a common type rating not only with the 787-8 and 787-9 but also with the popular Boeing 777, giving airlines additional flexibility in scheduling and training flight crews.

The history of aviation

From earliest of times it appears that man dreamed of flying like the birds and there are many stories of his attempts. One of the oldest stories from mythology tells of Icarus flying so high that the Sun melted the wax that held together his feathered wings, causing him to fall to his death.

Man did not understand the intricate1 workings of a bird’s wing.

Later, applying the technology of his day, Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) suggested that man might add to his muscle power by using levers2 and pulleys3 to obtain flight.

None of these attempts was successful and if man ever does fly under his own power, it will probably be in a craft similar to the Puffin, which is made of lightweight materials and is powered by its pedalling pilot.

Lighter-than-Air Craft

Man’s first successful flying vehicle was a lighter-than-air craft, the hot-air balloon. It got its start when the Montgolfier brothers sent aloft4 the world’s first airborne passengers – a sheep, a rooster, and a duck.

Man himself left the ground for the first time when Pilatre de Rozier journeyed 24 meters aloft in a Montgolfier balloon during a four-and-a-half minute flight in 1783.

Man at last was off the ground. However, it soon became evident that the balloon was at the mercy5 of the winds. If the balloonist could find an altitude at which the wind was travelling in the direction he wished to go, fine. If not, he might find himself heading for England when his destination was south of France.

In 1837 the great English pioneer of flight, Sir George Cayley, designed an efficient airship. It contained steam-driven propellers for steering and propulsion.

The Germans, however, were the first to discover a use for this first satisfactory airship. In 1874 Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin started to design military aircraft. He used a rigid6 metal framework to build a true flying ship, not simply an extension of the balloon.

The Zeppellin airships were the most highly regarded aircraft in the air, as bombers in war and as airliners in peace.

Heavier-than-Air Craft

March 28, 1910, marks the date that Henri Fabre successfully flew a powered seaplane at Martigues, France. The American Glenn Curts, a great pioneer of waterbased aircraft, flew his first Curtis Flying Boat on January 10, 1912.

The first four-engine aeroplane to fly was the highly successful Russian Knight biplane (or Le-Grand) designed, built, and flown by Igor Sikorsky in 1913.

In 1927 Charles Lindberg became a world hero when he soloed8 across the

Atlantic. The New York to Paris flight was made in the Ryan monoplane “Spirit of St. Louis”, which had only a single 220 horsepower engine.

The Germans are credited with operating the world’s first aeroplane service. In 1910 Deutschland III, a Zeppelin airship, began her service with the airlines: and with her sister ships she carried 35000 passengers over 170000 miles between major cities in Germany.

The Boeing 247, built in 1933, was the first of the modern, all-metal, singlewing airliners. It could carry ten passengers and could cross the United States in less than twenty hours. The aeroplane had de-icing equipment, control surface trim tabs, an automatic pilot, a retractable under-carriage, and it was the first twin-engine monoplane capable of climbing with a full load after failure of one engine in flight.

Even though the Boeing 247 was good, it was soon replaced by the new lowwing monoplane airliner introduced by the Douglas Company. The DC-1 was the prototype, and the DC-2 and DC-3 followed shortly thereafter. The performance of the DC-3 aeroplane was so extraordinary that 30 years after its first flight in 1935, the DC3s still outnumbered9 any other type of aircraft in world-wide service.
