Traffic Rules

Traffic regulations are international nowadays. But special regulations valid for one country only are also to be taken into consideration.

Traffic in Russia is on the right-hand side of streets and roads with traffic way wide enough for several cars moving abreast in one direction. It is forbidden to drive in the left-hand lane if the right-hand оne is free.

In Great Britain traffic keeps to the left. Motorcars, motorvans, buses and cyclists must all keep to the left side of the road. In most other countries traffic keeps to the right.

Accidents are often caused by carelessness. Every year several thousand people are killed on the roads, others are injured. There are rules that help to make the roads safe, but people do not always obey them. They are careless. If everybody obeys the rules, the road will be much safer.

Before crossing the road, stop and look both ways. Look right, look left, look right again. Then, if you are sure that the road is free, that there is nothing coming, it is safe to cross the road.

Traffic Signs

1.Traffic signs or road signs are signs erected above or at the side of roads to give instructions or to provide information to road users. The earliest signs were simple wooden or stone milestones. Later signs with directional arms were introduced.

2.With traffic volumes increasing since the 1930s many countries have adopted pictorial signs or otherwise simplified and standardized their signs to overcome language barriers and enhance traffic safety. On pictorial signs they used symbols in place of words usually basing on international protocols. Such signs were first developed in Europe and have been adopted by most countries to varying degrees.

3.Traffic signs can be grouped into several types. For example, Annex 1 of the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals (1968) defined eight categories of signs:

A. Danger warning signs

B. Priority signs

C. Prohibitory or restrictive signs

D. Mandatory signs

E. Special regulation signs

F. Information, facilities, service signs

H. Direction, position, or indication signs

G. Additional panels

In 2004 there were 52 signatory countries.
