Football the most popular game in the World is of two kinds in Britain: association football (soccer) and rugby. Soccer played almost in all countries remains one of the most popular games in Great Britain. Rugby football originated at Rugby public school. In this game players may carry the ball. Rugby is played by teams of 15 men with an oval ball.

Golf is Scotland's chief contribution to British sport.

English people love cricket. Cricket is played in schools, colleges, universities, in most towns and villages by teams which play weekly games. Test matches with other countries are held regularly. The game is very slow. In many ways this is the most English of all sports. It is a game for a hot Sunday.

Table tennis was invented in England in 1880. Although the game originated in England, British players don't have much chance in international championships.

People all over the world know Wimbeldon as the center of lawn tennis. Wimbeldon championships begin on the nearest Monday to June 22, at a time when English often have the finest weather. Millions of people watch the Championships on TV live and at full length.

Steeplechase, i.e. a cross country running is very popular in most European countries. The first cross country race was organized in 1837.

Englishmen like racing.

There are all kinds of racing in England: horse-racing, motor-car racing, boat-racing, dog-racing, donkey-racing. On sports days at school, boys and girls run races and even train for them.

The most famous boat race in England is between Oxford and Cambridge. It is rowed over a course on the river Thames. Thousands of people go to watch it.

The University boat-race started in 1820 and has been rowed on the Thames almost every spring since 1836.
