My Friend’s Family

Mr. Borisov, a friend of mine, lives with his family in Moscow. Borisov was born in Omsk on the second of March 1960. In 1977 he finished Secondary school. After school he served in the army. Now he is a retired officer. In 1995 he moved to Moscow. He got there an interesting and a well-paid job at a plant and lived in a hostel. He married soon and got a comfortable flat in a many-storied house in the center of Moscow. Borisov entered the extra-mural faculty of the Polytechnic Institute. He graduated from the Institute in 2000.

Borisov’s family is not large. He has a wife and two children: a daughter and a son.

Borisov’s wife is 30. She is five years junior to her husband. She is a teacher of English at one of the Moscow universities.

Borisov’s daughter is 10 years old. Her name is Ann. She’s four years senior to her brother. Ann is in the 4^th form of the secondary school. She’s a very lovely girl and an exemplary pupil. Her hobby is music. She plays the piano.

Borisov’s son Victor is six years old. He’s going to study at school. He can already read and write and he’s fond of computer games.

Ann and Victor help their mother to cook meals and to do the rooms. Ann usually goes shopping and helps her father in the work about the house.

OUR FAMILY

I am a student. My name is Ann Petrova. I am twenty-two years old. I live in Moscow with my parents, and I study at an institute. I want to be an engineer. I study English too.

I have a father and a mother. My parents are not old. Father is fifty, and mother is forty-five. My father’s a worker; he works at a factory. My mother’s a schoolteacher. They like their works very much.

I have a sister. My sister is a translator. Her name is Mary. She’s twenty-four. Mary has a husband. His name is Andrew. He is an engineer, and he works together with my father.

On weekdays we all get up at seven in the morning. We have breakfast and leave home at eight. We all go to work.

Studies At Our Institute

I am a first-year student at the Polytechnic Institute. I had to take entrance examinations in physics, chemistry, mathematics and Russian. My fellow-students from many towns and villages are specializing in different fields. We have highly qualified lecturers and professors, and the well-equipped laboratories are of great help to us.

The academic year begins in September. It lasts ten months and ends in June. There are two terms in the course of the academic year. So students take examinations twice a year. During the terms students have to attend lectures, to carry out laboratory tests, and to do practical work. The Institute has a five-year course of study. The first-year students study mathematics, physics, chemistry, English, elements of machines, and a number of other subjects. From the second year many students begin independent research work at student scientific societies.
