TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION. CONVERSATIONAL TOPICS

15 What facilities would your ideal town have?

16 Compare two cities or towns you have been from the point of view of their size, climate, historical monuments, places of interest, etc.

17 You are awarded a 10-day tour of Russia or any country abroad. You can choose only one city to visit. Give your reasons where to go. Present information on:

  1. the place the city is situated in;

  2. what important historic events took place in it;

  3. when it was founded;

  4. places of interest there are in it;

  5. cultural centres of the city;

  6. sport facilities which there are in the city;

  7. what places you are going to visit;

  8. what means of transport you are going to take to get there.

18 If you had the opportunity to create a city, what would you make it look like?

19 Imagine that it is the year 3000. The mayor has asked you to design the perfect city. Use this idea to write an outline for the assignment.

Ask yourself: What will I do first? What will the city be called? What will it look like? What kinds of buildings will I design? How will the people in the city live, work, play, and travel?

20 Speak about any city you’d like. Make use of the following words and expressions:

to discover the treasures, magnificent cathedrals, museums and galleries, medieval buildings, tranquil green spaces, the historic atmosphere, a shopper’s paradise, a market, the charming side streets, independent shops and boutiques, mouthwatering gifts, amenities, a warm and friendly welcome.

21 Practise the following dialogue.

Asking the way

  • Excuse me, maam. Could you tell me how to get to Carnegie Library from here?

  • Of course. It’s on Tenth Street just across from the Armoury.

CITY. SIGHTSEEING. ASKING THE WAY. ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS 205

  • On Tenth?

  • That’s right. You know where that is?

  • I’m afraid, I don’t. I’m new in town.

  • Well, do you know where the old Post-Office is?

  • No, I don’t. But I do know where Sears is.

  • I’m not sure that’s going to help us. Let me see... Why don’t you follow this street, Paddington Way, until you get to the stoplight. Take a right turn there, that’s Elm Street, and go up about 2 or 3 blocks, until you get to Tenth. Then turn left. The Library is on your right about 3 blocks down.

  • That’s right, 2 or 3.

  • ... turn left on Tenth, and the Library is on the right-hand side, 3 blocks down.

  • That’s right.

  • Well, thank you very much, maam. You’ve been very helpful.

  • That’s quite all right.

22 Explain how to get

from the suburbs to the centre of your city; to the central library; from the railway station to the central hotel; to the stadium; to the airport.

23 You are lost in the streets of Edinburgh. You are going to ask ~ a passer-by to show you the way. You are in Dairy Road. Ask a passer-by to show you the way to the Royal Mile.

24 Make up the dialogues.

  1. — ...

  • Certainly. Go down Regent Street to Picadilly Circus and then go down the Haymarket. Turn to the left at the bottom and in less than a minute you’ll be in Trafalgar Square.

  • If you walk, it’ll take you 10 minutes or a quarter of an hour.

  • There’s sure to be. But you’d better ask the policeman over there. He’ll give you the information you want.

  • Welcome.

  1. — Excuse me, can you tell me the way to Palace Square?

  • Thank you very much. Is there a bus?

  • Well, I see a crowd of people there...

  • Thank you very much. I’ll follow your advice. On my way back I’ll take a trolley-bus.

  • At Grand Hotel “Europe". Does any trolley-bus go there?

  • You have been most helpful. Thank you.

25 Respond the invitations.

  1. I’m going on a sightseeing tour. Would you like to keep me company?

  2. Let’s go to some historical museum on Sunday.

  3. Why not to go to some suburbs, today, Peterhof or Pavlovsk?

  4. I’ve got 2 tickets for the American exposition in the Art gallery. Would you care to come with me?

  5. How about going to the Zoo? It’s so much fun!

  6. Would you like to see a most impressive building of the new hotel? Everybody admires it greatly.

  7. Have you seen the new bridge across the river? Why not go and see it?

  8. What about going to see the new monument to...?
