  1. Analyze the following sentences according to the model:

Model: Martin had to pass that complicated exam the day before yesterday.

It is a simple extended sentence.

“Martin” – is the subject expressed by the proper noun.

“had to pass” – is a compound verbal predicate expressed by the verb with a modal meaning “to have” in the Past Simple Tense combined with the infinitive.

“exam” – is a direct object expressed by the common noun in the objective case.

“complicated” – is a prepositive attribute expressed by the adjective.

“the day before yesterday” – is an adverbial modifier of time expressed by the the adverb.

  1. He sent me a telegram this afternoon.

  2. Most of the western rivers flow down a steep slope near the sea.

  3. The woman with the snuff-stained lips turned around in her chair and looked at the clock.

  4. She spent her vacation with us in the Crimea.

  5. He’s coming to our place on Saturday in the afternoon.

  6. But for your advice I shouldn’t have acted rightly.

  7. The letter was addressed to my aunt.

  8. Some weeks later, I came back to Lawrenceville with a strange feeling.

  1. Convert into indirect speech:

  1. The mother said, “I lived in this town ten years ago”.

  2. He said to me, “My friends and me are going to the theatre tonight”.

  3. Granny said to Sally, “Can you go shopping for me?”

  4. Martin said, “Does your brother play table tennis, Den?”

  5. A woman said to a little girl, “Why are you crying?”

  6. She says, “Shall we go to the river tomorrow, friends?”

  7. The guide said to the tourists, “This famous building was built in 1789”.

  8. The aunt said to Mary, “I can give you my new bag”.

  9. I said, “Did anybody meet you at the station, Ann?”

  10. Mother said to her daughter, “Will you help me with the washing-up?”

Variant 2

  1. A) Point out one-member and two-member sentences. Identify a) if they are extended or unextended; b) if the two member sentences are complete or incomplete.

  1. She doesn’t work.

  2. Is she at home? Naturally.

  1. Ask questions to which the parts of the sentences given in bold type are the answers:

  1. I have been touching to contact with you all afternoon.

  2. Her marriage was fixed for the twenty- eighth of the month.

  3. I gave up the attack and went upstairs to unpack my baggage.

  4. You can leave your homework here on the desk.

  5. She expressed a desire to come to us again.

  6. She found it possible to finish the experiment in time.

  7. I received a long letter from my pen-friend.
