  1. Following the patterns of sentence analysis given below describe the simple sentences.

Analysis scheme:

  1. Define the type of the sentence according to the purpose of utterance and structure.

  2. Find the subject and say what it is expressed by.

  3. Name the predicate and say what type it belongs. Give its tense, aspect, mood and voice characteristics.

  4. Find the object; specify its type and morphological nature.

  5. Name the attribute, its position in the sentence and the morphological way of expression.

  6. Name the adverbial modifier and state its type.

  7. Name the homogeneous and detached parts of the sentence, if there are any, and specify their morphological nature and syntactic function.

Model: I opened the knife, and cut a length of twine, and came back into the room again.

  1. It is a simple, extended, two-member, declarative, affirmative sentence.

  2. I’ is a personal subject expressed by the personal pronoun first person singular.

  3. opened, cut, came back’ is a simple verbal predicate with homogeneous parts expressed by verbs in the Past Simple Tense.

  4. knife’ is a direct object expressed by a common noun in the Common Case;

a length of twine’ is a direct object expressed by an ‘of-phrase’.

  1. into the room’ is an adverbial modifier of place and direction expressed by a prepositional phrase.

  1. He passed by us with steady indifference, averted face, and fixed eyes.

  2. At the top of the stairs she had to stop and wave to her helpless young creature.

  3. She and her grandfather had driven into town to meet the returned South African missionary.

  4. How, by the way, are you going to manage that complicated case?

  5. Nicholas, unfortunately, had passed an unquiet night in that strange bed.

  6. With his hands by his sides, he strolled very slowly and inconspicuously, down the border.

  7. Nobody ever saw Shirac or the old sailor again.

  1. A) Rewrite the following sentences using the appropriate form of the verb. Pay attention to the rules of punctuation.

  1. Our brother as well as you (is, are) ready to accompany us to the station.

  3. Forty guineas for a room each week (is, are) not an uncommon figure at that time.

  4. It is he who (is, are) buying this house.

  8. Shingles (is, are) very infectious disease.

b) Translate the following sentences:

  1. Три долара – це сума, яку йому дає мама для шкільного обіду.

  2. Хтось знає відповідь на це складне питання.

  3. Моїм друзям, так само, як і мені, подобається грати у футбол.

  4. Або Марк, або його старший брат поїде на стажування за кордон.

  5. Нові газети та журнали з’являються у продажу кожного дня.

  6. Обидві картини цього відомого художника були продані на аукціоні.

  7. Більярд, разом і з картами, дуже популярна гра.

  8. Новини, про які ми щойно дізнались, засмутили не тільки нас, але й наших родичів.

  9. Кожен з моїх родичів надіслав мені вітальну листівку.

  10. Його остання і найкраща повість вийшла друком 2006 року.
