  1. A) Rewrite the following sentences using the appropriate form of the verb. Pay attention to the rules of punctuation.

b) Translate the following sentences:

  1. A) Point out the attribute. Define its type and say what it is expressed by.

Model: I have no intention of going there. – “of going there” – is an postpositive attribute expressed by the gerundial phrase.

  1. My friend received a letter of great importance.

  2. He is a conscious and industrious student.

  3. I’m not in the habit of reading other people’s letters.

  4. They must have a roof to cover them, a house to shelter them.

  5. She lives in a new house of modern construction.

  6. This is a book on architecture.

  7. An old orchard of apple-trees stretched down to a stream.

  8. The second story was very interesting.

  9. Bus number 97 will take you as far as the Opera House.

  10. They were passing by the old and empty building and saw its neglected garden in front of it.

b) Point out the apposition and define its type.

Model: They, the professors, were right in their literary judgement. – ‘the professor’ is a loose (detached) apposition.

  1. You look quite all right, Uncle Soames.

  2. President Roosevelt visited the developing country last month.

  3. James, a slow and thorough eater, stopped the process of mastication.

  4. That is his father, Sir Robert, a perfectly honest and cavalier.

  5. The following day I met Mr Nesfiled, a promising poet.

  6. The old cities of England attract a lot of tourists.

  7. Doctor Connor and his assistant, Mr Brown, were examining this patient.

  8. Aunt Mary and Uncle Peter found themselves in a lonely street.

  9. New York, the most popular city in the USA, is an important centre for international diplomacy.

  10. Henry Hudson, English explorer, made a ten-day exploration of the North River.
