At the supermarket
Prices in supermarkets are usually lower than in small shops. They offer all kinds of products, with larger out- of-town ipermercati (large supermarkets) carrying clothes, household goods, garden furniture, and home improvement products. They may also stock regional products.

Clothes and shoes are measured in metric sizes. Even allowing for conversion of sizes, Italian clothes
tend to be cut very small. Note that clothes size is la taglia but shoe size is il numero.

Cultural tip Like most of
Europe, Italy uses the continental system of sizes. Italian dress sizes usually
range from 36 (US 6) through to 48 (US 14) and shoe sizes from 37 (US 5 1⁄2) to 46
(US 12). For men’s shirts, a size 41 is a 16-inch collar, 43 is a 17-inch collar, and 45 is an 18-inch collar.

Colors are adjectives (see p.64) and in most cases have a masculine and a feminine form. The latter is usually formed by changing the final “o” to an “a.”
