Shops

Small, traditional specialized shops are still very common in Italy. But you can also find big supermarkets and shopping malls on the outskirts of cities. Local markets selling fresh, local produce can be found everywhere. You can find out the market day at the tourist office.

Cultural tip Although most Italian pharmacies also sell cosmetics and toiletries, the best shop in which

to buy these items is “la profumeria.” Some are very upmarket and offer a wider range of brands. “Il tabaccaio” (tobacconist) is the only licensed outlet for cigarettes and stamps (except the post office in the

case of stamps). Sometimes you will find a tobacconist counter within the premises of a bar.

Al mercato

At the market

Italy uses the metric system of weights and measures. You need to ask for produce in kilograms—chili for short— or grams. Some larger items tend to be priced individually, l’uno (each).

In many Italian markets you will find foodstuffs and also stands selling clothing and household goods.
