In Italy you can stay in a standard hotel (or l’albergo). There is also the small, family-run hotel (la pensione), which is usually cheaper. Another option is

In the hotel
Although the larger hotels almost always have private bathrooms, there are still some pensioni where you will have to share the facilities. This can also be the case in some youth hostels (ostelli della gioventù), where a whole family can stay the night for a very reasonable cost.
