Articles
В английском языке существует два вида артикля: определённый -the- и неопределённый -a (an)-. Одно и то же имя существительное может сочетаться как с определённым, так и с неопределённым артиклем в зависимости от значения и употребления имени существительного.
Неопределённый артикль (The Indefinite Article)
Употребляется, как правило, с существительными в единственном числе, обозначающими исчисляемые предметы.
Указание на принадлежность предмета к какому-либо классу однородных предметов.
Указание на профессию (но не отрасль бизнеса).
Janet is a personnel manager, and her husband is in marketing.
Указывает на предмет, о котором мы говорим впервые.

Употребляется с существительным, обозначающим какой-то предмет или лицо, при повторном употреблении в том же контексте.

Употребляется с существительными, обозначающими предмет, единственный в своём роде: the sun, the moon, the queen, the president, the Russian language…, the floor.
С существительными, которые употребляются с определением, выраженным прилагательным в превосходной степени или порядковым числительным.
She was the nicest person I have ever met.
Когда существительное имеет ограничивающее определение, чаще всего с предлогом -of-.

С названиями национальностей: the British, the Swiss.
С существительными, которые употребляются с определениями, выраженными словами: very, only, next, previous, last.

С именами собственными:
а) названием рек, морей, океанов, горных хребтов: the Alps, the Atlantic ocean, the Black sea, the Canary Islands;

с) названиями судов, гостиниц, газет: the Astoria, the Financial Times, The Economist;
d) названиями музеев, кинотеатров, ресторанов: the Tretyakov Gallery, the Red Lion;
Но: мы не используем артикля, когда говорим о магазинах, ресторанах, гостиницах, банках, названных в честь людей, которые их основали: Maxim’s restaurant, Lloyds Bank.
e) именами собственными во множественном числе, обозначающими членов одной семьи: the Petrovs, the Browns.
