The Degrees of Comparison of the Adjectives
По общему правилу одно- и многосложные прилагательные образуют степени сравнения по разному.
Односложные прилагательные образуют сравнительную степень при помощи суффикса -er, а превосходную – при помощи окончания -est.
big - bigger - the biggest
short - shorter - the shortest
По такому же правилу образуют степени сравнения прилагательные, оканчивающиеся на -y, -er, -ow.
happy - happier - the happiest
clever - cleverer - the cleverest
Многосложные прилагательные образуют степени сравнения при помощи -(the) more, most.
interesting - more interesting - the most interesting
beautiful - more beautiful - the most beautiful
Примечание: Некоторые многосложные прилагательные могут иметь 2 формы степени сравнения (как односложные, так и многосложные), т.е. -er, -est и more, most. К ним относятся: able, angry, common, cruel, frequent, gentle, handsome, pleasant, polite, quiet, serious, simple, sour.
Есть прилагательные, которые имеют две формы степеней сравнения.

little - less - the least
many - more - the most
older oldest (по возрасту)

Для усиления формы сравнительной степени прилагательных используются следующие слова
far - гораздо
much - намного
a little - немного, чуть
a bit - немного, чуть
Для сравнения одинаковых качеств используются выражения:
as … as - такой (ая) как …
not so … as - не такой (ая) как …
Например: This book is as interesting as the book I have read recently.
Обратите внимание на то, что в этих конструкциях прилагательное используется в начальной форме.
