IV. Додаткові завдання

Текст 1.

To live in Los Angeles you have to cultivate the art of staying awake. You must learn to resist the unceasing hypnotic suggestions of the radio, the billboards, the movies and the newspapers; those demon voices which are forever whispering in your ear what you should desire, what you should fear, what you should wear and eat and drink and enjoy, what you should think and do and be. They have planned a life for you – from the cradle to the grave and beyond – which it would be easy, fatally easy, to accept. The least wandering of the attention, the least relaxation of your awareness, and already the eyelids begin to droop, the eyes grow vacant, the body starts to move with obedience to the hypnotist’s command. Wake up, wake up – before you sign that seven-year contract, buy that house you don’t really want, marry the girl you secretly despise. Don’t reach for the whisky, that won’t help you. You’ve got to think, to discriminate, to exercise your own free will and judgment.

Текст 1. Real Britannia

However much the Prime Minister might wish to reinvent Britain in his own image, most foreigners are stubbornly resistant to thismakeover. According to a British Council survey, the rest of the world still firmly identifies this country with its traditions.

From Changing the Guard to tartan kilts, the Victorian passion for dressing up still colours Britain's international image, so when the Prime Minister posed for the cameras on the steps of 10 Downing Street without a tie in a casual open-necked shirt it was reproduced in virtually every newspaper in the world. Most foreigners, who have always admired and imitated British sartorial elegance, were embarrassed. What has happened to Savile Raw? Has the nation, that since the days of Beau Brummel, has given mankind its suits, hats, shoes and coats now nothing more to offer than imitation Armani?

Another intriguing detail to emerge from the survey: foreigners, it seems, admire the British currency. They see the pound as a symbol of our enviable independenceand have a deep affection for the Queen and her dynasty. Andthey like Britain the way it has always been, nostalgia and all.
