  1. Attitudes and Values

Individuality and Independence

As mentioned earlier, people in the U.S. consider themselves individuals. Related to this, people in the U.S. also value independence and self-reliance. Americans tend to view themselves as individuals first, rather than as members of families or groups. From an early age, children are encouraged to think and do things on their own. This value is inherent in the educational system which seeks to cultivate an adult who can manage his/her life independently.

Frankness and Curiosity

Directness is regarded as a desirable trait in the United States. People will often respond to questions and requests in a frank manner, considering that a direct answer is honest and not impolite. They may consider that indirect responses are a sign of insincerity. People are quick to get to the point and do not spend much time on formal social amenities. They often try to deal directly with others when difficulties or disagreements arise. In the classroom, students who frankly disagree with a professor's viewpoint often express their own opinions. They may also express other viewpoints freely, or even unsolicited. In general, they are eager to explain.

In the same vein, people in the U.S. are often eager to learn. Their curiosity may lead them to ask many questions. If you feel the question is too personal, feel free to say so.

Privacy

Usually, students in the U.S. feel comfortable answering most personal questions, especially if the question is posed by a foreign visitor. In general, curiosity is regarded as a positive trait. However, some people may take offense to certain questions regarding personal finances (for instance, the amount of money the person or their parents make, how much a house or car costs etc.), and details about family and health.

Informality

As mentioned earlier, people tend to be very informal in both speech and dress. They also like 10 entertain informally, treat peers in an informal manner, and like to make use of nicknames. They tend to pay little attention to formal social customs.

Achievement

Because of the society's emphasis on individuality and self-reliance, people in the U.S. tend to value personal achievement. This attitude often lends to the competitive nature of U.S. society, especially on the campuses of colleges and universities. Recognition of achievement is usually given to those who have accomplished things independently. Censure is directed at those who attempt to avoid accomplishing things by themselves. Again, honor codes are taken very seriously. In the U.S., people tend to try to solve problems, believing that hard work and initiative can change almost everything.

Materialism

Some people take great pride in their possessions as measures of their success or achievements. However, there are many people in the U.S. who do not agree with this definition of success. You should be aware that materialism does exist in the U.S. You should also remember; however, that asking explicit information about finances and possessions is considered impolite and inappropriate.

Time Orientation

People in the U.S. place a lot of emphasis on time. They try to use their time to the fullest extent and are often rushing around. This creates a very rapid pace of life. They keep very busy even during their leisure time by engaging in exercise, reading, etc. Usually people punctuality is respected. There is a great emphasis on meeting deadlines and being on time for appointments. U.S. society is also focused on the present and not the past. They may know little about the historical events that have had a great influence on the character of other societies. Less emphasis is placed on the past, while acting and working toward the future is emphasized.
