In order to show the animation Pete switched on the dvd.

or

12 3 4

Pete switched on the DVD in order to show the animation. — Петре включив ДВД, для того, щоб показати мультфыьм.

Pronounce this construction as a separate syntagm: intone it with a rising tone; make a pause after it:

In order to show the animation f Fete switched on the DVD. In this construction you use the infinitive as the modifier of purpose which expresses for what purpose the action of the predicate-verb of the sentence is carried out.

These were rules of pedagogic active grammar of oral speech. To teach to produce speech utterances in written or in print there can be used active grammar of written speech. In formulating rules of speech behaviour in this case attention is to be paid both to the structures conveying the meaning of the idea to be worded and to the use of punctuation marks, e.g.:

If you have to write for what purpose the action of the predicate-verb is carried out, then use the verb expressing the purpose in the form of the infinitive with the particle "to":

To inform

Place all the words referring to the infinitive after it: To inform clients about the terms of delivering the goods....

Place this construction before the subject of the sentence (to the zero place):

0 1

To inform clients about the terms of delivering the goods, we...

After the Subject place the Predicate of the sentence and all other members of the sentence:

0 1 2

To inform clients about the terms of delivering the goods, we contact

3 them by telephone.

If you use the infinitive as the adverbial modifier of purpose and place it to the zero position in the sentence (before the subject), then the comma is used after it in the following cases:

  1. if the infinitival construction of purpose includes more than five words: To get to the picnic before the rest of us, he had to leave the town at 8a.m.

  2. if the infinitival construction of purpose is used in the sentence with the predicate-verb in the form of the Imperative Mood: "To draw a triangle, use a ruler" [5, 45].

Below there is given an example of teaching the infinitive in the function of the modifier of purpose with the use of the principle of passive grammar.

Passive grammar is of help when we develop students' passive, or receptive, command of the language, i.e. when they are taught how to identify a grammatical phenomenon either in written or oral speech and then through attributing an adequate grammatical meaning to it comprehend the meaning of the utterance.

In passive grammar attention is paid to teaching students the grammatical signals and markers with the help of which they can recognize grammatical structures and forms. If we want to teach students to identify the infinitive as the modifier of purpose, we can suggest to them the following rules of their speech behaviour:

If reading a text you see that the infinitive with the words referring to it opens a sentence

To inform clients about the terms of delivering the goods.... and after it there follow the Subject and Predicate of the sentence as well as its other members
