1. FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE AND METHODOLOGY OF TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES
FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE 9
FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE
AND PLURILINGUAL AND INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION 12
FRAMEWORK FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE 13
DEFINITION OF METHODOLOGY 19
1.1. Foreign language communicative competence
To have a better understanding of what foreign language communicative competence is it is necessary to clear up some questions.
One of them is what the English language is studied for. A lot of answers can be found. Some people study it to be able to read fiction or specialized literature, newspapers etc. Others study it in order to communicate with foreigners or to be able to write either informal or business letters. Still others are eager to listen to and understand radio and TV programmes in English and so on and so forth. So, in general people study English (or any other foreign language) to acquire practical speech skills.
There are also people who would like to develop all of the above foreign language skills. Among them are students of Romance-Germanic philological faculties of universities and those of foreign language faculties of pedagogic universities. However, the aim of studying English pursued by future philologists, is somewhat different and wider than that pursued by students of other professions. Future philologists study English both to acquire all possible practical skills and to study language laws and peculiarities of this language.
All of the above suggested answers to the question what English is studied for are correct. Taking them into consideration, one can easily see that most people generally study English with the purpose of acquiring some practical speech experience through speaking, reading, listening and writing.
The other point to be cleared up is whether the social context people live in can really influence speech communication. Social context is made up by a number of factors such as political relations between countries, war and peace problems, environmental protection, basic religions, historical, moral, cultural and esthetical values of world civilization, famine in the world, ethnic problems, scientific-and-technical achievements, trends in fashion, music, clothes, fiction and the like, attitude towards processed foodstuffs, healthy and unhealthy ways of life, mass-media information, class division etc.
Are people able to express themselves adequately or can their language behaviour be proper if they have either faint ideas of the problems mentioned above or have none of them at all? Surely everybody believes it impossible, for people's speech communication is always strongly affected by social burning questions of the present day. There exists some drastic difference between the meaningful contents of speech, ways people speak, lexis and grammatical structures specific to one social group of people and those specific to another ones. This difference is caused by class divisions. Sometimes it is difficult for the people belonging to different social groups to understand each other in spite of the fact they speak the same language and are residents of one country.
The influence of the social background of life on people's speech and behaviour greatly shows itself when people communicate with their friends from abroad. Discussions of any interesting problems, events, etc. are always socially coloured. All information-exchange processes — communication aimed at getting in the know of the events reported in press releases, news exchanges of both life-supporting and scientific information or communication effected through reading — are undoubtedly socially backgrounded.
So, the social background people live in influences their opinions, views and their language behaviour when they share their ideas with others.
Thus, speech communication in both native and foreign languages is always influenced by the social, economic, political, geopolitical background people U.YS in,
Following the idea of people's speech being socially conditioned methodo-logists arrived at the conclusion that the process of studying the foreign language should also be socially conditioned. It means that in order to develop in learners adequate communicative skills (in speaking, reading, writing or listening comprehension) it is necessary that their mastering grammatical rules and other linguistic peculiarities be motivated by a real social background from the m i\ beginning of the teaching process. Only this condition can lead to an effec-iiw practical muntoringofthe language. This led to a methodological approach in foreign l.in^iiiigL- teaching Which w;is called the Communicative Approach.
The main idea of the Communicative Approach is to form and develop in learners foreign language communicative competence. It implies that learners while either speaking or listening, writing & reading the foreign language have
to use language forms included into a certain social background. For example, when introducing Present Indefinite versus Present Continuous a teacher's explanation shouldn't be limited by such examples as "They draw.' and "They are drawing.". They demonstrate grammatical forms only and are devoid of any meaningful social contents. In this case a kind of visual meaningful situation with a certain social colouring is to be offered to learners, e. g. Look at picture 1. What can we see in it?.
Kids draw with crayons on the pavement
Really, kids often draw on the pavement with crayons.
Now, look at the two boys in picture 2. What are the boys doing?
Fig. 2 Boys are drawing Spiderman with crayons on the pavement
Then the teacher addresses the learners and tries to involve them into communication:
And do you often draw on the pavement?
What do you like to draw with crayons?
What do girls like to draw on the pavement?
Do children draw with pencils on the pavement?
Peter, come up to me, please. Take the crayons and draw on the chalkboard.
The teacher stands with his/her back to the chalkboard and can't see Peter's
Tell me what Peter is drawing. Lena, will you ?
Then the teacher helps Lena to give a correct answer.
Peter, are you really drawing a car?
Peter's answer: I'm really drawing a car.
Do you often draw cars with crayons on the pavement?
The teacher helps the boy to give a correct answer.
Well, thank you, Peter. Will you sit down here ? — And the teachers points at
her/his chair. Peter sits down on it.
Where is Peter sitting now?
Where does Peter usually sit?
By Foreign Language Communicative Competence we mean learners' readiness and ability to take part in a socially conditioned foreign language speech interaction through speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension on the basis of correct social, cultural and linguistic use of language forms. In other words, Foreign Language Communicative Competence can be understood as a kind of socially and linguistically correct behavior of a person.
