Exercises.

  1. Translate into English.

1. Вращающаяся петля провода, съемное кольцо, небольшое изменение, быть изолированным друг от друга, противоположная сторона, движение против часовой стрелки, откланяться, источник энергии, противоположное направление, отличительные особенности конструкции, внешняя цепь.

  1. Find the answers to the questions.

  1. What are the major parts of a generator?

  2. What is the purpose of a generator?

  3. In what case no electrical contact is possible?

  4. Where does the change from ac generator to dc one take place?

  5. When is the emf equal to zero?

  6. How many electric motors and generators are there in the motor-generator sets that power large transmitters?

  7. What is the ship’s source of power?

  8. Describe how does the generator change the motor’s mechanical energy back into the electric energy?

  9. What law is the action of a motor based upon?

  10. What are the differences between a d.c. motor and a generator in?

a) They use one electric motor to drive one or two generators.

b) At the commutator.

c) Unlike poles attract and like poles repel.

d) They are:

e) When no flux is being cut.

f) To change mechanical energy into electricity?

g) The differences between a d.c. motor and a generator are usually only in the manner of mounting the brushes and connecting the windings.

h) In the boilers, burning oil changes water to steam. The steam drives a turbine, and the turbine turns the ship's generators. The emf from the generators runs the motor of the transmitter's motor-generator set-and the generator changes the motor's mechanical energy back into the electrical energy to operate the transmitter.

i) Because two segments are insulated from each other?

j) It is the oil in the tanks.

  1. Write down what of these features of a generator and an electric motor are common, what features belong to the generator and what features belong to the electric motor.

Common features

Features of a generator

Features of an electric motor.

  1. The magnetic field may be supplied either by permanent magnets or by electromagnets.

  2. The rotor coils are connected to the external circuit through a split-ring commutator.

  3. Its rotor coils are not connected to an external circuit and its field is always supplied by electromagnets.

  4. It consists of a stator that provides a magnetic field and a rotor that rotates within the magnetic field.

  5. The rotor consists of coils of wire wound on a laminated iron armature and connected through brushes to an external circuit.

  6. It converts electrical energy into mechanical (usually rotational) energy.

  7. Rotor coils are connected to the external circuit through slip rings.

  8. A generator converts mechanical (usually rotational) energy into electrical energy.
