Verb + gerund: admit, advise, appreciate, avoid, complete, deny, like, enjoy, dislike, excuse, feel like, forget, give up, go on = continue = keep on, can’t help, mind, miss, practise, stop = quit, bear, (can’t) stand, succeed in, think of/about, approve/disapprove of, look forward to, insist on, accuse of, suspect of, prevent from, warn against, forgive for…
Adjective + preposition + gerund: afraid of, busy in, capable/incapable of, disappointed at, fond of, good at, guilty of, keen on, pleased at, proud of, tired of, sure of, surprised at…
3. Translate into English.

Differentiate between the active and the passive forms of the gerund: He hates criticizing people vs He hates being criticized.
4. Answer the questions. Use the gerund.
1. Ms Young was anxious to play the title role in the new play. What was Ms Young looking forward to? 2. The problem was discussed in detail. The manager approved of it. What did the manager approve of? 3. At first Olga couldn’t drive a car in London, now she can. What has she gotten used to? 4. Helen never plays the piano when somebody is listening to her. What does Helen avoid? 5. Elizabeth didn’t want to be recognized and put on a wig and dark glasses. What did she want to avoid?
When the subject of the sentence and the doer of the action are the same person use a gerund but not a gerundial complex: Mr Brown doesn’t mind being sent to Bedford [not his being sent] vs Mr Brown doesn’t mind his wife’s being sent to Bedford.
5. Ask for confirmation. Use the gerund.
Eg. “Tom felt he was rude and apologized.”
“Do you mean Tom apologized for being rude?”
1. They offered to examine Tom at once and he didn’t mind it. 2. They offered to examine Tom and she didn’t mind it. 3. Ms Parker wants to become an actress. She dreams of it. 4. Ms Hilton wants her son to become a sailor. She dreams of it. 5. Mr Gate wants Max’s name struck off the list. He insists on it. 6. I don’t smoke. I gave it up.
After need / want / require and worth the active form of the gerund is used to express a passive meaning: The shoes need mending, The problem is worth discussing.
6. Say it in English.
Факт не стоит того, чтобы о нем упоминать. 2. Большинство избирателей считают, что за такого сенатора не стоит голосовать. 3. Костюм нуждается в чистке. 4. Машина требует ремонта. 5. Телевизор нужно настроить.
