  1. Profession of a Journalist.

What is journalism? Journalism is information. It is communication. It is the events of the day in few words, sounds or pictures. Journalism is about people. It is produced for people.

The journalist should be well educated, calm, sociable. A good journalist has to write well, to choose the short sentences instead of long ones. Journalism can be both enjoyable and interesting and challenging. It can separate you from your family for a great amount of your time. It can cut you off from a good deal of social life with your friends. To be a good journalist you must have a great deal of curiosity. Journalism is no place for the shy person who finds it difficult to talk to strangers. The journalist must be interested in the work of people want to communicate with them, to maintain friendly relations.

5. Careers in Journalism.

When I think about a career journalist having associations - reporter, photographer, editor, writer and correspondent. These people work in the field of journalism and the media. For example, photographer is operator of electronic cameras used in video reporting of news.

In journalism there is a awards for good work.

For example, The Pulitzer Prize is an American awards. It is administered by Columbia University in New York City. Prizes are awarded yearly in twenty-one categories. The winner in the Public Service category of the Journalism competition is awarded a gold medal.

In order to become a professional need a lot of work but also get to start the education. In Belarus, this type of education we can get at the Institute of Journalism at BSU. I want to focus on our department periodical press. It was created May 27, 1998. Head of the Department is Svorob Alex. Konst. At the department operates 9 teacher, 3 of them – senior lectures.

All the work department aims to help students better assimslate expenrience wordsmiths.

I want to compare the training for Journalism in Britain and Belarus.

In Britain.

There are two main stages of training journalists in B. It is the beginners and for the experienced senior. The training can be based around ate newspaper or upon a university or college.

The university training gives the necessary background for of shorthand, typewriting. English language and literature, the organizations local government, law, ect.

The training in newspaper is held under the supervision of the editor.

Training for J. in B. is organized by the National Council for the Training of Journalists. He was set up in 1950-th as a result of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on the Press.

The aims and purpose of the NCTJ include the establishment of standards of qualification, and the formulation and administration of schemes for the training and education of journalists, including press photographers.

The NCTJ offers a full range of distance learning courses in newspaper and magazine journalism.

Training for Journalism in Belarus.

Training of Journalists in Bel. by the BSU. It started in 1944. Since the more than 6 thousand specialists of mass media, radio and television have been trained.

The Faculty of Journalism was singled out as an independent unit of the BSU in 1967 with G.V. Bulatskiy at is head.

The teaching staff consider training journalists for their practical activity to be the main purpose of the educational process.

The students of the day study get education in the following specialities: International journalism, literary work, information and communication, journalism (press, radio, TV), web-journalism.

The basic course of training encompasses 5 years and graduates get the specialist degree. The academic year is divided into two semesters, each is completed with the examination session.

Now renamed the Faculty of Journalism at the Institute.

I study at the Department of Periodicals. Associate professor A.K.Svorob. This is department of theory and practice of modern journalism.
