  1. Young Jolyon as a contradictory character.

Young Jolyon is Soames’s antagonist in the novel actually it’s not Bosinney but Jolyon who represent everything that Soames despises: free spirit , independence of mind, sincerity, open feelings, and non-conformism. He is depicted as a contradictory character, because he admits himself that he is half a Forsyte and half an outcast. The society , made him an outcast, because he went against the rules of the society: he abandoned his wife and little daughter little daughter June for the sake of another women what makes him matter worse that other woman was June’s governess a women of very low social position. What makes him especially contradictory is his double nature: by birth and family background he is a true Forsyte. While by his mentality and spiritual inclination he is a non-conformist which makes him close to Bosinney who is absolutely Forsyte antagonist. Being half a Forsyte, Young Jolyon admits that Forsyte is a great force. And the Forsyte money makes the world go round. He also admits that there are a lot of positive features in the Forsytes. For example, hard-working, common sense and pioneering spirit. Their money goes into all the spheres of business and also into charity. Due to the Forsyte’s money arts, literature, architecture and science develop. But what makes Young Jolyon rebel against the rule of the society is the only feature, which he hates in the Forsytes is the sense of property which corrupts human nature and especially human relation and feelings.
