Text 4 Our Institute
I am a student of the Syktyvkar Forest Institute. I am proud of my Institute. It is one of the best educational establishments in our republic.
The history of the Institute goes back to 1952 when the Branch (Filial) of the St. Petersburg Forest Technical Academy was organized in Syktyvkar. In 1995 the Filial was reorganized into the Syktyvkar Forest Institute.
Nikolai M. Bolshakov, Doctor of Economics, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences became the director of the Syktyvkar Forest Institute.
The teaching staff includes more thаn one hundred lecturers, Candidates of Science, Professors. They conduct research in different sciences.
The main objective of the Institute is training highly-qualified specialists for forestry and forest industries. There are four faculties and three departments: day-time, evening and correspondence.
There are about three thousand students at the faculties: Mechanical, Technological, Agricultural and the Faculty of Engineering Economics.
The Technological Faculty trains engineers in the following specialities:
Chemical technology of wood
Information systems in chemical and forest enterprises
Forestry engineering
Automation of technological processes and productions
Industrial and civil engineering
Environment protection and rational use of natural resources
The students of the Faculty of Engineering Economics are specialized in
Economics and forest complex management
Economics and management in agriculture
Management
The students of the Agricultural faculty have an option to major in the following agricultural trades:
Forest and park management
Mechanization
Electrification and automation
The Mechanical faculty trains professionals in the following specialities:
Forest machinery and equipment
Automobiles and transport enterprises
Motor-roads and airdromes
Service in transport
Each faculty is headed by a dean. The course of studies lasts 5-6 years. The academic year begins on the 1st of September and it is divided into two terms (semesters). Students take exams at the and of each semester. If the results of the examinations are good students get grants. Twice a year we have vacations - two weeks in winter and two months in summer.
The instruction process at our Institute is provided with excellent training facilities such as well-equipped laboratories, computer classes, foreign language laboratories. There are also good lecture halls, a laboratory and good reading rooms. Our teachers do their best to give us professional specialization and provide us with general and cultural education.
The first and second year-students study general engineering subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Drawing as well as Computer science, a Foreign language and a number of others. In the third year students begin to study specialized subjects.
A very good tradition of our Institute is that theory is accompanied by practical training. The sites for practical training are the Syktyvkar paper mill, the Syktyvkar forestry, the wood-working plant and other enterprises of our republic. Our graduates work in different branches of the national economy.
Many students carry out research and participate in the students’ scientific conferences held annually. They also take part in the Olympiads in Physics, Mathematics, Forest ecology and other subjects. The Institute provides post-graduate training in some specialities such as economics and forest complex management and forestry.
A lot of students go info sports. Our volleyball and basketball teams are well known in the republic for their good results in the competitions. Many students take part in the amateur activities, theatrical groups, fun club shows. There is a tradition to hold festivals devoted to the first year-students inauguration and New-Year carnivals. The team «Duby-Kolduny» is a participant in the competition of the city and republican festivals of KVN (Clubs of merry and ready-witted people).
It is interesting but difficult to study at our Institute, especially for the first-year students as they do not know yet how to organize their work and time.
