Topic 58 Can business do anything they want to make a profit?
Nowadays, merchants (торговцы) tend (как правило) to strive (стремятся к) for remaining in (для того, чтобы остаться) existence by all means (во что бы то ни стало) due to the extensive competition (из-за обширной конкуренции) and burdensome pressures (тяжёлого давления). However, I am always amazed (Я всегда поражаюсь) when I hear that it is necessary for businessman to do anything possible to make a profit. It may be as highly laudable (очень похвально) and exemplary a thing as it is held to be (признаётся) by those who are addicted (пристрастился) to money.
Apparently, I strongly object to (Видимо, я категорически против) it due to various factors (в силу различных факторов) that weigh heavily (тяжелым бременем ложатся) against the notion (на понятие). The foremost reason (Причина всего) is that merchants would be rewarded (вознаграждены) by nothing (лишь) but distrust (недоверие) and even hatred (даже ненависть) from the customers if they hardly care (волнует) about anything but money. It is widely known that nothing can be compared with the good reputation of a company (ничто не может сравниться с хорошей репутацией компании), which attracts more upright and loyal customers (честных и постоянных клиентов). Suppose we are facing the dilemma of which brand (Предположим, что мы стоим перед дилеммой, какой бренд) of shampoo to purchase. It is of no surprise if you decide to take the one produced by P&G or other reputable large companies. As a result, what assures the buyers most is the credit of the service suppliers?
Another subtle explanation (тонкое объяснение) for my point of view rests on the fact (опирается на тот факт) that various appalling results (ужасные результаты) would in some cases, be caused by the immoral (аморальным) and even illegal businesses. It is decent to make profits and receive the repayment (оплата, вознаграждение) of diligent work (добросовестная работа) and continuous efforts (непрерывные усилия). Nevertheless, producing unqualified or even deleterious commodities (вредных товаров), which possibly lead to detriments (ущерб, прич. ущерб) of people's health (что, возможно, приведет к повреждениям здоровья людей) or security, is never the sensible method to operate a company (разумный способ управлять компанией). What impressed me most (Что поразило меня больше всего) is the tragedy happened several months ago in some part of China. Hundreds of infants (детей, младенцев) died because of the nonnutritive milk powders produced by some merchantmen (merchant - торговец) without ethics. Therefore, it is never too rigid (слишком жесткими) to denounce the immoral and irresponsible (чтобы осудить аморальные и безответственное) behavior. The third point I would like to mention (Я хотел бы упомянуть) is that the merchants themselves would not be reassured (~спокойно упокаивать, перестраховывать, заверять) to enjoy the property acquired in improper ways (имущество приобретенное незаконными способами).
In most cases, it is the essential satisfaction of benefiting the public (это является существенным удовлетворением в пользу общественности), rather than the material items, which inspires people profoundly (вдохновляет людей глубоко). What a pleasant thing it would be to receive repayment of your diligent work and continuous efforts! On the contrary, few people would go into rapture (мало кто пришёл бы в восторг) even if they possess a mass of wealth (обладали массой богатств) earned through indecent (ɪndi:snt – неприличный, ~нечестными) ways. Thus, only by obeying (подчиняясь, выполняя) commercial (торговой ethics) disciplines could a businessman obtain (получать, добывать, достигать) supreme success and maximum pleasure (наивысший успех и максимум удовольствия).
Taking into all the reasons above into account, it is barely (только, просто) too arbitrary (произвольный, случайный) to conclude that only by descent (decent - хороший; неплохой, сносный) and good Intentioned business activities could a company achieve respectable (уважаемый, порядочный) and decent success.
