Poor people living mostly on one or more plants such as wheat, rice, or com often suffer of undernutrition, or insufficient caloric intake or food quantity. Survival and good health require that people must consume not only enough food but food containing the proper amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. People whose diets are insufficient from these nutrients suffer from malnutrition.
Severe undernutrition and malnutrition lead to premature death, especially in children under age five.
Famine occurs when people in a particular area suffer from widespread lack of access on food as a result to catastrophic events such as flood, earthquake, or war. Because it is so visible and dramatic, famine receives most of the media attention.
Most world hunger is protein hunger because poor people are forced to live in a low-protein, high-starch diet of grain.
