EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

FOUR YEARS

Holly Brisbone

Ercina, California

I.Most four-year-olds are not as pleasant to 1. l…ve with as they were at three. Physically, they may hit kick, throw, and break things. 2. Emotion…lly, they are more selfish, impatient, defiant, and boastful. Socially, they argue, 3. comp…te, and are bossier than in the past. Yet four-year-olds can be loving and 4. aff…ctionate as well. They need and seek parental approval. One minute they 5. st…mp their feet "and say they "hate" their mother or father. The next they give the parent a present of a shiny stone or a flower plucked from someone's garden.

II. Four-year-olds are increasingly 6. … . They are responsible 7. … their own care. They are 8. … of their abilities, possessions, and creations as they try to do more, they are highly competitive. They are " bigger " than everyone and can do "everything." At this age, children often deny responsibility for their actions . It is common to hear, "A big dog 9. … by and knocked it over," or "Joe made me hit her."Four-year-olds use their language ability with enthusiasm. Parents are often dismayed with some of the additions to their vocabulary. They use silly names and enjoy a play on words. "Antsy-wantsy-Nancy," or similar nonsense, often sends them into hysterics. They want to talk like older people, but do not know enough. They boast, tell tall tales, and tattle on others. Four-year-olds have 10. … separating fact from fantasy.

III. Parents should 11. … exaggerations with humor since they are not deliberate lies.Although four-year-olds like people 12. … at their jokes, they do not like them to laugh at their mistakes. They 13. … want to be a "baby" anymore. Until this time they 14. … people were just having fun when they laughed. Why do the four-year-olds 15. … this way? It is just a phase of emotional development. At this age, adults should respect the youngsters' need to explore and test themselves and try to treat them less like babies. Flexible rules seem to work best.
