Curiosity

Holly Brisbone

Ercina, California

I.Babies are very 1. c…rious about the world around them. That curiosity is the source of learning and should 2. incr…se with age. However, some parents stifle, a child's curiosity by the way they protect the child—or the house—from harm. They do not realize that children are 3. educ…ting themselves while cluttering up the house. Children should be kept safe not by 4. lim…ting their freedom to explore, but by removing hazards from their 5. env…ronment and checking on them frequently.

II. Young children seem to be into everything. They 6. … into every corner and closet. They 7. … and examine everything within reach. It is impossible for caregivers to 8. … what a two-or three-year-old might do next. One minute the child might be dumping out drawers and the next, thorough "painting" shoes with a paintbrush and water. Surprised parents may find a «doll» or truck in the washing machine because "It was dirty." A plastic horse stands majestically in the center of the mashed potatoes as the child explains, "Horgeu eat too." Parents can 9. … comfort in the knowledge that the inquisitive child is usually bright 10. … well.

III. Such a child 11. … a tireless explorer. Everything about an object is important to find out—what it is, how it works. Children must test, try out, and 12. … their own skills before they can advance to the next stage. All caregivers 13. … remember that while curiosity 14. learning it can also be dangerous. They 15. … to out-think, outguess, and sometimes out jump inquisitive youngsters. But still things happen.
