Computers in our life.

A computer is a complex electronic device that can store and process large quantities of information. Following instructions, computers can perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and give answers to many problems in a fraction of time.

There are two main types of computing equipment - digital and analogue. They work differently and give different results. The digital computer performs more functions than the analogue one.

Computers are used in many fields nowadays. They can answer telephones, retrieve information instantly, read and answer letters in much less time than a person can.

A computer can record all kinds of information, It can classify, report and edit data, information that is put in. The computer must be only correctly programmed to peform these functions. A computer programmer is a person who is trained to program or communicate with computers. He uses special computer languages to control and Instruct the different parts of the computer. He writes a program, the detailed set of instructions for the computer, in a computer language. Computers have so many everyday uses that the business world would stop without them. They can reserve airplane tickets, keep bank accounts, control prices, order goods and supplies and do many other things. By using computers, people in business save large amounts of time. Computers control so many parts of society that without them people's lives would be much more difficult. Nowadays computer makers are working at the problem of introducing small computers into our every day life making them personal. They are trying to develop a computer that will understand human language.

Uses of Electricity

Electric current was born in 1800 when the Italian scientist Volta constructed the first source of continuous current. Since that time numerous scientists and inventors, Russian and foreign, have greatly contributed to its development and practical application.

Now electric power has become universal. We can't imagine our life without such electrical devices as electric lamps, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, washing machines and other electrically operated devices that are widely used today, In fact, telephones, lifts, electric trams and trains, radio, television, computers and lasers have been made possible only owing to electric current.

Probably the most important use of electricity in the modern home is producing light. It was a Russian engineer, Alexander Lodygin, who made the first successful incandescent lamp. The famous American inventor Thomas Edison improved the lamp having used a carbon filament. Then Lodygin invented a lamp with a tungsten filament, the lamp that we use today.

Some electric devices are based on specific properties of electricity: electrostatics in the case of photocopying machine and electromagnetism in the case of radar and television.

Electric energy finds its most important use in industry. At every plant and factory there are different electric machines, for example, transformers, motors, engines, dynamos etc. Automation which is one of the main factors of technical progress today is impossible without electricity.

One of the greatest advantages of electricity is that it is clean, easy to regulate and generates no by-products.

Today consumption of electricity per capita is an indicator of the state of development and economic health of a nation.
