ANCIENT STEEL-MAKING SECRET

1. When two metallurgists at Standford University were trying to produce a "super plastic" metal they became interested in the secret of Damascus steel, the legendary material used by numerous warriors¹ of the past, including Crusaders.

2. The remarkable characteristics of Damascus steel are supposed to become known to Europe when the Crusaders² reached the Middle East in the 11th century. Their swords³ turned out to possess fantastic qualities. The swords made of this metal could split a feather⁴ in air and at the same time retain their edge sharp through many battles.

3. The secrets of Damascus steel were known to have been handed over from generation to generation in many parts of the ancient world, especially in Persia, where some of the finest specimens were produced. For eight centuries the Arab sword makers kept the secret about their techniques and methods. But with the invention of firearms⁵ the formula of Damascus steel was lost for mankind and was never fully rediscovered.

4. The two metallurgists carried out a lot of researches. When they realized that they might be close to the discovery of the secrets of Damascus steel. A comparative analysis of new plastic steel and Damascus steel of the ancient weapons showed that the newly obtained alloy like ancient steel was very rich in carbon. As a result, high carbon content was founded to be the basic requirement for obtaining Damascus steel. The two metallurgists believed it had to be from 1% to 2%, as compared to only a part of 1% in ordinary steel. The research of Standford University metallurgists proved possibility to make steel of even greater hardness than Damascus steel.
