My family

Let me introduce myself. I am Jane Ivanova. At the moment I am an extra-mural student of the Technical University. I am a first year student. I study and work at the same time. It is difficult for me, because there is a lot of work to be done at the plant and at the university and I am always busy. Our family is not very large. I have a father, a mother and a younger sister. We all live together in new flat in the center of Krasnoyarsk.

My father Oleg Petrovich is 43 years old. He is an engineer at the Aluminum Plant. My father is a tall and well – built man with short dark hair and blue eyes.

My mother’s name is Nina Ivanova. She is a pleasant looking woman of about forty with brown hair and soft dark – brown eyes. She is kind and gentle. My mother is a teacher of Russian.

My sister’s name is Ann. She is 5 years my junior. Ann is a pupil. Ann is fond of reading. Literature is her favorite subject. As for me I want to become an engineer. I like to study economy very much. I hope to pass the state examinations and to get the qualification of an economist. I hope to be lucky.

Our family is friendly, we like to spend time together. We have a lot of relatives. They live in different towns and villages. We often go to see them. We are happy when we are together.

The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the name of the largest island of the British Isles and it consists of England, Scotland and Wales. London is the capital of the United Kingdom. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, Cardiff of Wales and Belfast of Northern Ireland The chief rivers of Great Britain are: the Severn, the Thames and some others. Lakes are situated in England and in Scotland, where people call them lochs. Loch Ness is one of the largest lakes in Scotland. It is famous for the "Loch Ness monster". Woods make up only about 8 percent of the territory of Britain.

Britain is very rich in coal, natural gas and oil. Great Britain is a highly devel­oped industrial country. The main fields of British industry are machine-building, ship-building, electronics.

The climate in Britain is mild. Britain has mild winters, not very hot summers and a lot of rain all the year round. The political system in Britain is parliamentary Monarchy. Officially the head of the state is the Queen (or the King). The power of the Queen in Great Britain is not absolute. She acts only on the advice of the ministers and Parliament. The Parliament consists of 2 Houses - the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords consists of 1000 peer who are not selected by the people. The House of Commons is selected by the people.

London is one the largest cities in the world. London was founded on the banks of the Thames. The Great Fire of London in 1666 destroyed many wooden houses and dirty streets. After that London began to grow.

London consists of three parts: the City of London, the West End and the East End.

The City is situated in the heart of London. About half a million people work in the City but only 6000 live there. It is the financial centre of the UK with many banks, offices and Stock Exchange. But the City is also a market for goods from all parts of tile world.

The West End is the centre of London. Here there are the historical palaces and famous parks: Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St. James's Park.

The name "West End" is associated with wealth and luxury. It is the area of the large cinemas, hotels and shops. There are about 40 theatres, many museums and the best art galleries.

The East End covers a wide area. It is the eastern part of London, the tradi­tional poor area. Now it is changing because of the new industries and construction of very expensive houses for rich people. It is also an area of London where people from other countries come to find work.
