4 квітня 1949 року США, Канада, Великобританія, Франція, Італія, Бельгія, Нідерланди, Люксембург, Норвегія, Данія, Ісландія, Португалія підписали у Вашингтоні Північноатлантичний договір (через це його часто називають Вашингтонським договором) і таким чином утворили Організацію Північноатлантичного договору (NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), яку також називають Північноатлантичним альянсом. Кожна з держав приєдналась до нього добровільно після публічного обговорення і внутрішньої парламентської процедури. У 1952 році до НАТО ввійшли Греція і Туреччина, в 1955 – ФРН, у 1982 – Іспанія, в 1999 – Польща, Чехія та Угорщина, а в 2004 р. – Латвія, Литва, Естонія, Словенія, Болгарія, Румунія і Словаччина. На нинішній момент членами цієї організації є 26 держав Європи та Північної Америки.

Діяльність НАТО відповідає цілям та принципам Статуту ООН. Північноатлантичний договір було підписано 4 квітня 1949 року відповідно до Статті 51 Статуту ООН, яка підтверджує невід'ємне право незалежних держав на індивідуальну або колективну оборону.

НАТО - це міжурядова організація, у якій усі держави-члени повною мірою зберігають суверенність і незалежність. На сучасному етапі зусилля Альянсу спрямовані, передусім, на підтримку міжнародного миру й безпеки, протидію новим викликам і загрозам, гарантування стабільності й добробуту її країн-членів.

Головним принципом діяльності Організації є загальне визнання суверенними державами необхідності співпрацювати на основі неподільності безпеки його членів. Альянс дає можливість досягти індивідуальних власних цілей в питаннях національної безпеки через колективні зусилля.

Для того, щоб стати членом НАТО будь-яка країна має відповідати високим політичним, економічним, соціальним, ресурсним та безпековим стандартам. 

Ухвалення всіх рішень в НАТО відбувається на принципі консенсусу. Кожна країна-член НАТО має право вето, що дозволяє заблокувати будь-яке неприйнятне для неї рішення Альянсу.
