A perfect pair
Katie and Alexander were in every respect a perfect pair. Both were blond, amiable and pleasant-looking. Alexander had a wide face, tightly curled hair and an engaging grin. Although he never said anything remotely memorable, or expressed an opinion that differed from those of his friends, he was charming, good-humoured and relaxed. During the day he worked as a financial analyst for a firm of City stock-brokers, but he seldom mentioned it. His real pleasures of life, one felt, came from his holidays, his friends and from Katie.
Katie Mulholland was, beyond a doubt, an ideal match for Alexander Mustoe. She was that rare thing, a genuine English rose, small and slender and sweet-natured with perfect fair skin, blue eyes and a pointed little nose like a miniature dog. Her blonde hair, which she sometimes tied back with a black velvet bow, was thick and straight. Like Alexander, there was nothing introspective about her.
