Windows 7 ranks as the most sophisticated computer program ever made. It costs more money to develop and took more people to build than any previous computer program — ever.
Hardware and Software
At the most fundamental level, all computer stuff comes in one of two flavors: hardware or software. Hardware is anything you can touch — a computer screen, a mouse, a CD. Software is everything else: e-mail messages, digital pictures of your last vacation, programs like Microsoft Office.
Windows 7 is software. Your PC, on the other hand, is hardware. Chances are very good that one of the major PC manufacturers — Dell, Acer, HP/Compaq, IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba, or ASUS, for example — made your hardware. Microsoft, and Microsoft alone, makes Windows 7.
Most software these days ask you to agree to an End User License Agreement. When you first set up your PC, Windows asked you to click a button labeled I Accept to accept a licensing agreement.
Why do pCs have to run Windows?
You don’t have to run Windows on your PC. Windows is not the only operating system in town. The big operating system is Linux, which is pronounced “LIN-uchs.” It’s a viable contender for netbooks. If you expect to use your PC only to get on the Internet — to surf the Web and send e-mail from the likes of your Gmail or Hotmail account — Linux can handle all that. By using free programs such as Open Office and online programs like Google Docs (docs.google.com), you can even cover the basics in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, contact managers, calendars, and more. It’s hard to measure the percentage of PCs running Windows versus Mac versus Linux. Although the numbers are changing, Windows accounts for about 90 percent of all hits on major Web sites, Mac runs about 10 percent, and Linux kinda picks up the crumbs.
A terminology survival kit
A program is software that works on a computer. Windows, the operating system, is a program. So are computer games, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word (the word processor part of Office), Internet Explorer (the Web browser in Windows), Windows Media Player.
A special kind of program called a driver makes specific pieces of hardware work with the operating system.
