самообразованию;

развитие когнитивных и исследовательских умений;

развитие информационной культуры;

Student Life

For those who are new to the city, Glasgowиis a wonderful place to explore, to

try something new, develop your skills and get a world class education. Those

students already living in Glasgow will know what a great city it is, but will now get

б

to experience it from the perspective of aблnew student. Glasgow is one of the most

exciting cities in the UK and has one ofиthe largest student populations. You will find

something to cater for every taste, be dancing until 3 a.m., shopping for the latest

ая

fashions, sampling some of the local music or relaxing in one of the many coffee

shops. The University offers many opportunities to get involved in student life. They

are to:

нн

join one of our two Student Unions, both offering endless hours of

entertainment;

Visits.

These are just a few of the ways you can make your time at university as

лfulfilling and exciting as possible. Life at the University of Glasgow is more than just

getting

a degree. All students

in need of dwelling

accommodation

are offered

a modern comfortable hostel with three, two and one-room apartments. The students'

life is interesting and versatile.

Cheerful discos, literary and theatrical soirees,

concerts

of classical

music are

not yet a complete list of the cultural entertaining

spare time programs for students. The sports club has become the centre of the University’s sports life. Students play football, basketball and volleyball. There are

4

facilities for swimming, boxing, tennis and athletic gymnastics. The University’s sport aerobics team takes part in the international competitions.

Familyиtypes

Family arrangements in the United States have become more diverse with no

ая

particular household arrangement representing half of the United States population.

The different types of families occur in a wide variety of settings, and their specific

нн

functions and meanings depend largely on their relationship to other social

institutions. Sociologists have a special interest in the function and status of these

forms in stratified (especially capitalist) societies. The term "nuclear family" is

ро

commonly used, especially in the United States, to refer to conjugal families.

Sociologists distinguish between conjugal families (relatively independent of the

кт

kindred of the parents and of other families in general) and nuclear families (which

maintain relatively close ties with their kindred).

е

The term "extended family" is also common, especially in the United States.

This term has two distinct meanings. First, it serves as a synonym of "consanguinal

Э

family" (consanguine means "of the same blood"). Second, in societies dominated by

лthe conjugal family, it refers to "kindred" (an egocentric network of relatives that

extends beyond the domestic group) who do not belong to the conjugal family. These types refer to ideal or normative structures found in particular societies.

Any society will exhibit some variation in the actual composition and conception of families. Much sociological, historical and anthropological research dedicates itself to the understanding of this variation, and of changes in the family that form over time. Times have changed; it is more acceptable and encouraged for

5

mothers to work and fathers to spend more time at home with the children. The way roles are balanced between the parents will help children grow and learn valuable life lessons. There is great importance of communication and equality in families, in order to avoid role strain.

According to the work of scholars Max Weber, Alan Macfarlane, Steven Ozment, Jack Goody and Peter Laslett, the huge transformation that led to modern marriage in Western democracies was "fueled by the religious and cultural value system provided by elements of Judaism, early Christianity, Roman Catholic canon

law and the Protestant Reformation".

Home shopping

Home mail delivery systems and modern technology (such as television,

лtelephones and the Internet) in combination with electronic commerce and business-

to-consumer electronic commerce systems allow consumers to shop from home.

There are three main types of home shopping: mail or telephone ordering from

catalogs; telephone ordering in response to advertisements in print and electronic

media (such as periodicals, TV and radio); and online shopping.

Online shopping has completely redefined the way people make their buying

decisions; the Internet provides access

to a lot of

information about a

particular

product, which can be looked at, evaluated and comparison-priced at any given time. Online shopping allows the buyer to save the time and expense, which would have been spent traveling to the store or mall.

Parts of a house

Many houses have several large rooms with specialized functions and several
