Environmental protection |
||
л Environmental protection is a practice of protecting the natural environment |
on individual, organizational or governmental levels, for the benefit of the natural environment and humans. Due to the pressures of population and technology, the biophysical environment is being degraded, sometimes permanently. This has been recognized, and governments have begun placing restraints on activities that cause environmental degradation. Since the 1960s, activity of environmental movements has created awareness of the various environmental issues. There is no agreement on

the extent of the environmental impact of human activity, and protection measures are occasionally criticized.
Academic institutions now offer courses, such as environmental studies, environmental management and environmental engineering, that teach the history and methods of environment protection. Protection of the environment is needed due to various human activities. Waste production, air pollution, and loss of biodiversity (resulting from the introduction of invasive species and species extinction) are some of the issues related to environmental protection.
Environmental protection is influenced by three interwoven factors: environmental legislation, ethics and education. Each of these factors plays its part in influencing national-level environmental decisions and personal-level environmental
values and behaviors. For environmental protection to become a reality, it is |

important for societies to develop each of these areas that, together, will inform and |

drive environmental decisions. |

Ecology is a very popular word today. But what does it mean? Ecology is a
science which studies the relationship between all forms of life on our planet and the |

environment. This word came from Greek “oikos” which means home.АГНИThe idea of |

home includes our whole planet, its population, Nature, animals, birds, fish, insects |

and all other living beings and even the atmosphere around our planet. |

Since ancient times Nature has served Man giving everything he needs: air to |
|
breathe, food to eat, water to drink, wood for building and fuel for heating his home. |
For thousand years people lived in harmony with the environment and it seemed to |

them that the natural resources had no end or limit. Withоthe industrial revolution our |
||||
negative influence on Nature began to increase. |

Large cities with thousand steaming, polluting plants and factories can be |

found nowadays all over the world. The by-products of their activity pollute the air |

we breathe, the water we drink, the fieldsблwhere our crops are grown. That’s why |

those who live in cities prefer spendingиtheir days off and their holidays far from the |
||||
noise of the city, to be closer to the nature. Perhaps they like to breathe fresh air or |

swim in clear water because the ecology is not so poor as in the cities. |

So pollution is one of the most burning problems nowadays. Now millions |

chimneys, cars, buses, trucks all over the world exhaust fumes and harmful |

substances into the atmosphere. These poisoned substances pollute everything: air, |
||||
land, water, birds and animals. So it is usually hard to breathe in the large cities |

where there are lots of plants. |

Every year the atmosphere is polluted by about 1000 tons of industrial dust and |

other harmful substances. Big cities suffer from smog. Cars with their engine have |
||||
become the main pollution source in industrial countries. Vast forests are being cut |
||||

down for the need of industries in Europe and the USA. The loss of the forests upsets |

the oxygen balance of new waste lands. As a result some species of animals, birds, |

fish and plants have disappeared and keep disappearing. |

л Water pollution is very serious too. Ugly rivers of dirty water polluted with |
factory waste, poisoned fish are all around us. And polluted air and poisoned water lead to the end of the civilization. So nowadays a lot of dead lands and lifeless areas have appeared because our actions and dealings can turn the land into a desert.
