share of global pharmaceutical R&D expenditures (after the United States and Japan). The British economy is boosted by North Sea oil and gas reserves, valued at an estimated £250 billion in 2007.

Since 1979 and the latter Margaret Thatcher Government, most state-owned companies were privatized and opened to public competition and listed in the UK's financial market to augment demand as well as supply in the British economy, and UK government introduced indirect taxes rather than direct taxes to the public. Government involvement in the British economy is exercised by HM Treasury, headed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Bank of England is the UK's central bank and its Monetary Policy Committee is responsible for setting interest rates. The currency of the UK is the pound sterling, which is also the world's third-largest reserve currency after the U.S. dollar and the euro. The UK is a member of the

Economy of England

The Economy of England is the largest economy of the four countries of the United Kingdom.

England is a highly industrialized country. It is an important producer of textiles and chemical products. Although automobiles, locomotives, and aircraft are among England's other important industrial products, a significant proportion of the country's income comes from the City of London. Since the 1990s, the financial services sector has played an increasingly significant role in the English economy and

the City of London is one of the world's largest financial centers. Banks, insurance

companies, commodity and futures exchanges are heavily concentrated in the City.

ка

The British pound sterling is the official currency of England and the centralАГНИbank of

the United Kingdom, the Bank of England, is located in London.

е

The service sector of the economy as a whole is now the largest in England,

т

with manufacturing and primary industries in decline. The only major secondary

industry that is growing is the construction industry, fuelled by economic growth

provided mainly by the growing services, administrative and financial sector.

Economy of the United States (1)

Э

The economy of the United States is the world's largest national economy and

the world's second largest overall economy, the GDP of the EU being approximately

л$2 trillion larger. Its nominal GDP was estimated to be $15.8 trillion in 2012,

approximately a quarter of nominal global GDP. Its GDP at purchasing power parity

is the largest in the world, approximately a fifth of global GDP at purchasing power

parity. The U.S. is one of the world's

wealthiest nations, with abundant natural

resources, a well-developed infrastructure, and high productivity. It has the world's sixth-highest per capita GDP (PPP). The U.S. is the world's third-largest producer of oil and second-largest producer of natural gas. It is the largest trading nation in the

42

world. Its four largest export trading partners are as of 2011: Canada, China, Mexico and Japan.

The United States has a mixed economy and has maintained a stable overall GDP growth rate, a moderate unemployment rate, and high levels of research and capital investment. It has been the world's largest national economy (not including colonial empires) since at least the 1890s. As of 2010, the country remains the world's largest manufacturer, representing a fifth of the global manufacturing output. Of the world's 500 largest companies, 133 are headquartered in the United States. This is twice the total of any other country. The labor market in the United States has attracted immigrants from all over the world and its net migration rate is among the highest in the world. The U.S. is one of the top-performing economies in studies such as the Ease of Doing Business Index, the Global Competitiveness Report, and others.

The United States is ranked first globally in the IT industry competitiveness index.

Petroleum and gas in everyday life

Petroleum is the backbone of the world’sиenergy mix and it is the basis of

countless items we use every day. Petroleum is a powerful tool that enables

technological advancement, social development and prosperity, so it is important that

б

we continue to provide crude oil, NGL andблrefined products to our customers at home

and around the world. Most people иassociate petroleum with fuel to power cars,

airplanes and other forms of transportation that use internal combustion engines. But

нн

ая

Plastics: Because plastic is made from petroleum, you’ll find it

practically everywhere – in children’s safety seats, appliances, car bodies and

interiors, computers and more.

ро

Medicine: Polymers derived from petroleum are used as a base

commodity to make syringes, heart valves, blood and plasma bags, tubing,

кт

prosthetics, pacemakers and medicines.

Agriculture: The farming

industry relies

on petroleum

for fertilizer,

е

irrigation pumps, transportation of food, refrigeration, and wrapping and

Э

packing materials.

Construction: Petroleum is a chemical compound in paints, lacquers,

л linoleum, carbon fiber, graphite and asphalt, used to surface roads.

Aviation: Lightweight, petroleum-based composites and carbon fiber

technology allow aircraft and other vehicles to travel farther on less fuel.

Petroleum is part of our lives in a million hidden ways, and it’s set to remain a

vital resource for the world well into the future. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that oil demand will reach about 99 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2035 – 15 million bpd higher than in 2010.

Preserving food

Modern ways of packaging food benefit everybody - whether you are a stressed workaholic, a busy parent or a gourmet. And modern food packaging often means

petrochemical-derived materials such as plastics.

Pre-packed food makes our shopping quicker and our cooking safer.АГНИPackaging

can be tailor-made to suit the particular product and make it easier to transport and to

preserve. And the careful analysis conducted by the manufacturers makes the

consumer sure that what they are eating is safe and healthy.

ка

е

Petrochemical-based food packaging has many virtues: performance, low cost,

т

light weight, thermal insulation, shock-resistance, hygiene. We all take that for

granted. But it also helps reduce global hunger. In theоdeveloped world, the volume

of food wasted before it reaches consumers

иis only 2%. But this figure rises

dramatically - up to 50% - in emerging nations where packaging, refrigeration and

distribution systems are limited. One recent report estimates that in the former Soviet

б

Union about one quarter of all food productionблwas wasted because of poor or non-

existent packaging. As plastics packagingи becomes more widely introduced in

developing countries, it will help preserve meager food supplies, minimize waste

ая

through spoilage, and protect against the dangers caused by food-borne disease.

It also makes sense for the environment: a lorry can carry much more product

нн

and much less packaging when plastics are used. Numerous studies have shown that,

thanks to the change from glass to plastics, lorries can indeed carry much more

product, which means fewer delivery trips, entailing a drastic decrease in fuel

ро

consumption and a similarly dramatic reduction of the resulting pollution.

Do materials derived from the petrochemical industry ensure better quality?

High technology

Petrochemistry has made possible the quantum leap achieved in

communication technology during the last decades. An impressive number of

components in our computers, telephones, TV sets, radios or CD players owe their

existence to the petrochemical industry.

о

и

The computer could not function without microchips, made using

petrochemicals. In computer housings and computer keyboards styrenic plastics are

бл

used. Indeed, in the electronics field, petrochemistry is everywhere, from the board of

a printed circuit to the chip, cablings and connectors. Miniaturization has become the

и

keyword. All our electronic equipment has steadily become smaller, lighter and

handier in the last few years: digital cameras, mobile phones, laptops.

CDs and CD-ROMs are made of the most common petrochemical-based

ая

product: it is a simple piece of plastic,бabout 1.2 mm thick. Most of a CD consists of a

piece of clear polycarbonate; a plastic derived from benzene, through bisphenol A

and cumene. This polycarbonate is impressed with microscopic bumps arranged as an extremely long spiral track of data, then covered with a thin aluminum layer. Then a

thin acrylic layer is sprayed over the aluminum to protect it. The label is then printed

onto the acrylic... and slipped into a polystyrene "jewel box", the transparent, plastic

boxes in which CDsннusually come. The electronic industry could not do without the

materials derived from the petrochemical industry: they ensure better design, better

electrical insulation and safety, ease of assembly and an amazing capacity for

miniaturization and data storage.

Definition of petroleum and gas

Literally 'rock oil,' it is a general term for crude oil and natural gas. Primary

Эsource of automotive fuels and lubricant oils, petroleum is a complex mixture of

hydrocarbons and paraffins in some areas, and aromatics and cyclo-paraffins in other areas. Thought to have been formed from decomposition of animal and vegetable life under heat and pressure during geologic periods, it occurs usually in deep rock strata but sometimes near to the surface. When 'cracked' and refined, it produces hundreds

46

of petrochemicals that are converted into tens of thousands of products, with new ones appearing continually.

Crude petroleum (crude oil) contains about 80 percent carbon compounds, 11 percent hydrogen, and 1 to 2 percent of nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. In most oil fields, oil and natural gas occur together, gas being the top layer on crude oil under which may lie water. One barrel of petroleum equals 5604 cubic-feet of natural gas,

1.45 barrels of liquefied natural gas (LNG), or about one barrel of gas oil, called also

Children's bedroom

Nowadays most, if not all components of playhouses, infant bouncers,

changing tables, prams and tricycles are made from petrochemicals-derived products.

However nostalgic we may be about old wooden and metal toys, we cannot help

ка

acknowledging the higher safety of today's playthings: lighter, easier to process, they

е

cause much less damage when coming into contact with a child's head or foot!

Children may not be overly concerned with their own safety, but they certainly

т

know what they like to play with and why. Some petrochemical-based materials are

о

chosen for their rigidity and are used in toy cars, for example, or bicycle helmets, or

и

the desktop on which children do their homework. Some are selected for their

flexibility and are used in dolls' limbs. Some are used for their light weight: as any parent struggling with a pram in a busyблunderground station can tell you, maneuvering a modern one requires less muscle power today. And did you know that the colorful building bricks we have knownи for years are made using a very specific petrochemical-derived plastic, called ABS, with enough rigidity for the bricks to fit into each other strongly and sufficient flexibility for children to be able to take them

apart again?
