Употребляется только в форме настоящего времени в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях.
Need используется и как модальный глагол, и как смысловой. В качестве смыслового глагола чаще:
Do we need to stay this evening? (Need we stay this evening?) – Нам нужно остаться сегодня вечером?
Часто используемая форма модального глагола need – needn’t. You needn’t try to explain this situation to me.
В утвердительных предложениях need как модальный глагол не используется. Вместо этого он используется как смысловой глагол to need.
