На нядаўнім рэферэндуме ў Літве 91,4 працэнта ад тых, хто прыйшоў да выбарчых урнаў, прагаласавалі за сяброўства Літоўскай рэспублікі ў Еўрапейскім Саюзе, супраць выказаліся толькі каля 9,5 працэнта. У самых «еўрааптымістычных гарадах і раёнах» сваю згоду на інтэграцыю ў ЕС пацвердзілі па 95 працэнтаў удзельнікаў рэферэндуму.
Найбольшая колькасць еўраскептыкаў аказалася там, дзе пераважаюць жыхары некарэннай нацыянальнасці: у Вісагінасе (горад персаналу Ігналінскай АЭС) супраць уступлення ў ЕС выказаліся 21,5 працэнта, у Шальчынінкайскім раёне — 20,6 працэнта, у Вільнюскім раёне (вялікі працэнт беларусаў і спаланізаваных беларусаў) – 19 працэнтаў.
Цяпер дамова аб уступленні Літвы ў ЕС, падпісаная 16 красавіка ў Афінах, павінна набыць моц з траўня 2004 года.
Літоўскае кіраўніцтва перажыло некалькі непрыемных гадзін, калі ў першы дзень галасавання (суботу), увечары пасля закрыцця выбарчых участкаў, сталі вядомыя дадзеныя аб колькасці тых, хто прыйшоў галасаваць. Іх было 23 працэнты, плюс яшчэ 7 працэнтаў прагаласавала па пошце. У паветры адчуўся пах катастрофы, бо, згодна з законам, можна лічыць, што рэферэндум адбыўся, калі ў ім удзельнічала не меней паловы выбаршчыкаў краіны. Адразу быў распрацаваны надзвычайны план па актывізацыі выбаршчыкаў у сельскай мясцовасці. Прадстаўнікі вышэйшага кіраўніцтва звярнуліся да выбаршчыкаў з заклікамі прыйсці прагаласаваць у нядзелю. Прэзідэнт Раландас Паксас звярнуўся да пачуцця нацыянальнага гонару: «Нашы латвійскія і эстонскія суседзі, як і ўся Еўропа, глядзяць на нас. Мы першымі галасуем за незалежнасць. Не дадзім атрымаць верх над намі ляноце і абыякавасці. Ад усяго сэрца прашу вас – падумайце пра будучыню, галасуйце за саміх сябе і за Літву».
Прэм’ер-міністр Альгердас Бразаўскас звярнуўся непасрэдна да сялянаў: «Вяртайцеся з палёў, узгадайце, што вам трэба прагаласаваць». А ў нядзелю ва ўсіх касцёлах ксяндзы заклікалі вернікаў выканаць свой грамадзянскі абавязак, каб «мець спакойнае сумленне».
