Preface
The guide is meant for the first year students of correspondence department who master their English. It is suited both for students who need to take a corrective course in pronunciation and those who need to develop their already acquired skills of pronunciation.
This guide is designed in complete coordination with the Credit Module System of teaching and with the Programme for the course.
The purpose of the guide is to help the students to develop their own pronunciation habits and to enable them to teach English pronunciation to others.
It is primarily concerned with the speech sounds of the English language. It also takes into account other components of the phonetic system of English: the syllabic structure of words, word stress and intonation (prosody). The course is based on the type of English pronunciation which is known as “Received Pronunciation” (RP) and which stands above all kinds of English pronunciation within or without Great Britain. The main part of the guide considers rules of reading and pronunciation of vowel and consonant sounds. It is divided into sections that cover each sound separately and in comparison with other similar sounds in order to teach students to avoid possible phonetic and phonological mistakes.
Different exercises are provided to improve students` pronunciation: sound identification, imitation, comparison and distinction of similar sounds in contrast, tasks for self control.
What is important is that each section is provided by a number of sound tracks that facilitates self studying of a correspondent student. The exercises can be done in class in couples or groups as well as independently and individually.
The guide also includes assignments for self study work, individual research work, examples of Module tests, scheme of assessment.
It is to be used by lecturers and students alongside with the basic textbooks and is to make the process of studying easier and more interesting and entertaining.
We hope that we have managed to equip the first year correspondence students who study English with all basic necessary materials that they will need during the first year of their studying at university and that will help them to assume correct English pronunciation and complete the course successfully.
