Personal Protective Equipment

1 Purpose

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shall be used at all times for the specific tasks.

2 Scope

The crew shall consistently wear the correct PPE to develop safety culture.

3 Responsibility

  • The ship’s Master is responsible for the implementation of the company’s safety culture.

  • All personnel have the responsibility for:

  1. adoption of best practices in the workplace to avoid accidents;

  2. wearing appropriate PPE;

  3. checking that other crewmembers use PPE properly and for informing them of any non-conformity with this procedure.

4 Description

4.1 PPE

The following PPE use is mandatory whenever any personnel are outside the protected accommodation areas onboard vessels, offshore installations, docks, dry-docks, harbours, quaysides, yards and all similar areas:

  • Hard hat head protection

  • Safety footwear

  • Additionally, personnel working in such areas shall wear coveralls with long sleeves

  • Safety glasses when outside the accommodation

Before any task crewmembers shall carry out a ‘head to toe’ check to ensure each part of the body is protected for the job.

The crewmembers shall inspect the PPE before use. Defective and damaged PPE shall be discarded (списываться) or set aside for repair.

It is the Master’s duty to ensure adequate PPE, its maintenance and sanitation (профилактика).

4.2 Coveralls

Crewmembers shall wear coveralls when performing any job or activity outside protected accommodation areas.

Coveralls should be of a high visibility colour (preferably orange) with reflecting strips on the sleeves, legs and trunk.

Coveralls should be made of mostly cotton fabric.

Coveralls shall be long sleeved. Cutting sleeves or rolling up sleeves is not permitted.

4.3 Foot protection

Any person entering any work area shall wear safety footwear prior to entry.

  • Safety footwear shall fit properly and cover the whole foot;

  • Safety footwear shall have protective steel toe caps and non-slip chemical resistant soles with adequate tread (подошва)

  • Safety footwear shall be replaced if worn or damaged (metal exposed, torn uppers, pierced (дырявые) soles, etc.)

Within the accommodation and other inside areas of vessels, open-toed and backless footwear is not sufficiently protective to feet or the person and is forbidden.

4.4 Hand protection

Crewmembers shall wear work gloves to reduce the risk of hand injury.

Rubber gloves shall be worn when handling corrosive (едкий) substances and chemicals.

‘Butcher gloves’ shall be worn when cutting or chopping meat or similar items requiring any force.

Gloves shall fit well and cover the entire hand and wrist area.

4.5 Head protection

All personnel shall wear hard hats outside protected accommodation areas.

Hard hats shall be light-coloured and equipped with a chinstrap (ремешок).

If there are any cracks or other damage, hard hats shall be replaced prior to the marked expiry date. Do not paint hard hats in order to conceal any cracks.

Hard hats should be thoroughly inspected at regular intervals for cracks, tears in the fastening system, abrasion (потёртости), or other signs of wear.

No holes should be made in the plastic shell. Any modifications to the structure of the hard hat will reduce protective value of the hard hat.

4.5.1 Bump Caps

Bump caps are a form of head protection and shall be used in confined (замкнутый) spaces and engine rooms where the risk is ‘bumping of the head’ as opposed to ‘falling objects’. If no Bump cap is supplied the usual hard hat shall be worn.

Bump caps can be used in engine and machinery spaces and inside cofferdams and tanks where there is no risk from falling or dropped objects overhead.

4.6 Eye protection

Safety glasses shall be worn during any task generating flying particles or other hazards for the eyes.

The frames should be heat resistant and equipped with side shields.

Special eye protection is necessary for some tasks (e.g. grinding – шлифовка, welding, handling chemicals, etc.)

Standard work glasses should be worn only for routine tasks with no special risk.

4.7 Hearing protection

Hearing protection (e.g. earmuffs or plugs) shall be used in machinery spaces when machines are in operation and in all situations involving excessive noise.

Hearing protection is required when noise exceeds 85 decibels.

Most earplugs are disposable (одноразовые) and do not require maintenance.

Earmuffs should be cleaned regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and kept in a case or bag.

4.8 Respiratory protection

Dust masks are to prevent dust from entering the airways. They are not effective against chemical vapours. They are not suitable for use in the presence of liquid aerosols, gas, toxic fumes or solvents used for spray painting. DUST MASKS DO NOT GIVE SUCH PROTECTION.

Dust masks and cartridge-type respirators are disposable and do not require maintenance.

Various types of respirators are available including respirators with fine-particle filters, respirators with chemical cartridges, and gas masks.

Select the appropriate respiratory protection carefully.
