A. Oh, no. Last summer, for example, was cool and rainy. But we are lucky this summer.

B. I see. By the way, it’s my first visit here. And what are winters like in Moscow?

A. Frosty and snowy as a rule. If I’m not mistaken, winters in your country are not so cold as ours, are they?

B. No, they are not. Winter is rather a pleasant season in my country. The usual temperature is about 5 above zero.

A. Well, let’s get down to business and discus your enquiry.

B. We like your equipment and want to sign a contact with you.

A. I’m glad you want to cooperate with us.

B. But there are some problems, Mr Orlov. Some terms and conditions are not acceptable to us.

A. O.K. Let’s meet next week in my office. Here is my card with our new address, telex and fax numbers.

B. Agreed. Thank you.

Today is Jane’s first day at work. She must leave the house at 8 o’clock as she must be at the office a little earlier than 9 to get ready for her work and bring the mail. She has a lot of duties at the office. She must work hard till one o’clock. She can go out for lunch but she must be back at the office at 2 o’clock. She must type different documents, answer telephone calls, make appointments and do many other things.

Smirnov’s day (Любимцева, С. Н. p. 145)

Smirnov is the President of a foreign trade firm.

In the morning he gets up at about 6.30. His wife and children get up later. He goes to the bathroom to take a bath. Then he has breakfast. For breakfast he has some eggs, coffee and sandwiches. He leaves for work at eight o'clock. His office hours begin at 9 o'clock but he usually comes earlier to get ready for work.

In the morning the secretary brings him letters and cables. He reads the mail and sends answers to foreign firms. He often receives foreign businessmen at his office. They usually come to discuss prices, terms of payment, shipment and delivery and other business points. Sometimes he goes abroad on business to have talks with foreign customers. Smirnov can speak two foreign languages.

At 12.30 Smirnov has lunch. He finishes work at 6 o'clock in the evening, but if there is some urgent business he stays at the office later.

Smirnov usually has dinner at home.

After dinner he reads newspapers and magazines, listens to the radio or watches television and helps his wife about the house. He goes to bed at 11.00.

LOBOV: We know you sell a lot of equipment to many customers in Russia. I’d like to have your latest catalogues and quotations.

MORROW: Here you are, Mr Lobov. You can see our equipment at the plant, if you like. Besides, we can arrange the training of your specialists there.

LOBOV: That’s an idea. When can I visit your plant?

MORROW: I can show you round the plant on Wednesday morning.

LOBOV: Agreed.

Day off (Любимцева, С. Н. p. 176)

Today is Sunday. It is our day off. As a rule we get up at about 9 and at 10 o’clock we have breakfast. We have some coffee, ham, cheese and eggs for breakfast.

The weather is wonderful today. It's sunny and frosty. There is a lot of snow outside. Our daughter is going to a skating rink. She is fond of skating. Our son is going to the country. He likes skiing. My wife and I are not going to stay at home either. We are going out for a walk in the park.

We are great theatre-goers. We go to the theatre as often as we can. But before we decide to buy the tickets we like to know something about the play.

Tonight we are going to see a new comedy. The reviews say it is very amusing.

We hope that the performance will be good and we will enjoy it.

a) SPENDING A WEEKEND

I usually work hard all the week. When my office hours are over I'm very tired and I hurry home. As a rule I have a lot of work to do about the house too.

But when the weekend comes I try to enjoy it as much as I can. I'm fond of music, I like ballets and operas. So when I have an opportunity I go to the Bolshoy Opera House.

I am lucky because I've got a ticket for the Saturday performance at the Bolshoy. Verdi's "Aida" will be on. I'm sure I'll enjoy the music and the singing. I am looking forward to the performance on Saturday.

On Sunday I am going to the Pushkin Art Museum. There is an exhibition of famous French paintings there.

b) THE WEEKEND

Most people in Britain work a five-day week, from Monday to Friday. Schools, colleges and universities are also closed on Saturdays and Sundays. So from Friday evening till Monday morning people are usually free.

People look forward to the weekend and when Friday comes, they say to each other when they leave work "Have a nice weekend."

Students, young people who work away from home and people who are not married like to go away for the weekend. They may go home to stay with their relatives or friends in different parts of the country or stay at a hotel in the country or at the seaside. It is more difficult for married people with children to go away for the weekend.

Those who stay at home at the weekend try to have a good time too and to do some work about the house.

Saturday morning is a very busy time for shopping as this, is the only day when people who are at work on weekdays can go shopping all day long. At weekends shops close between 5.30 and 6.00 p.m. and they are closed all day on Sunday. On Saturday the shops in the centre of big cities usually close at 1.00 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon the most important sports events take place - football, tennis and others. Some" men go and watch, others sit and watch the sports programmes on TV.

Saturday evening is the favourite time for parties, dances, going to the cinema or the theatre, in fact for "going out".
