Mini-dialogues for lesson 2 “Weekend activities”

# 1 a) Practise the pattern dialogue with your partner.

A Henry, what are you doing this weekend?

B I’m not sure, why?

A Well, how about going to a concert of classical music?

B No way! I hate classical music! I’d rather go skating. Will you join me?

A I can go to the rink with you in the afternoon and in the evening I’ll be enjoying Tchaikovsky at the Opera House.

B Deal. I’ll pick you up at 11 a.m. See you on Saturday.

A So long.

c) Make up a dialogue according to the following situation:

A You wonder if your friend wants to go to the restaurant with you this weekend. But he suggested a basketball game in the afternoon. You decide to join him on the pitch in the afternoon and go to the restaurant after the game.

B Your friend suggests going to the restaurant on the weekend. But you have a counter offer for him. You want to play basketball and propose to join you. Tell him what time you’re going to pick him up.

# 2 a) Practise the pattern dialogue with your partner.

A wife is talking to her husband.

A Honey, my Mum is coming on Saturday. I want you to meet her at the station?

B Hum-m... I’m playing golf with Richard on Saturday afternoon. You know I always play golf on Saturdays.

A But darling, the train arrives at 8 p.m.!!!

B Anyway, I can’t make it. Richard, Percy and I are watching a football match at the pub after golf. We do so whenever there’s a match on TV at weekends.

A I’m afraid, you’ll have to change your plans for Saturday evening. Otherwise you risk spending the rest of your days with Richard and Percy.

b) Cover the dialogue and write down B’s lines.

A Honey, my Mum is coming on Saturday. I want you to meet her at the station?

c) Make up a dialogue of your own, using following situation.

A You want your brother to help you with the house work on Sunday. But he has planned some outdoor activities. Still you need his help. Try to persuade him to help you.

B Your sister wants you to help her to do the housework on Sunday, but you’ve already arranged to play basketball with your friends. And in the evening you’re eating out with your girlfriend. Tell you sister about your plans for Sunday.

# 3 a) Practise the pattern dialogue with your partner.

A You know what? I saw an interesting soap opera on Channel 4 this Sunday. Did you watch it too?

B Ugh! I never watch such kind of films. Actually, I hate them. Most of them are really stupid and dull.

A Oh, really? Then, why do you have 3 TVs in your flat? And what do you occupy yourself with at weekends, I wonder?

B Well, I didn’t say I hate watching all TV programmes. I love BBC documentaries and entertaining talk shows. I also like playing the piano, so I often spend weekends practising and learning new musical pieces.

A Hm-m, I see. I’d better hurry as I don’t want to miss the next episode of my favourite “stupid” serial. See you next time.

B Take it easy. See you.

b) Cover the dialogue with a sheet of paper and fill in the gaps with the missing parts.

A You know what? I saw ……………………………………... Did you ………….?

B Ugh! I never watch ………………………. . Actually, I ………………….. . Most of them are really stupid and dull.

A Oh, really? Then, why do you have 3 TVs in your flat? And what ……………………………………………………………?

A Hm-m, I see. I’d better hurry as I don’t want ………………………………

………. . See you next time.

B Take it easy. See you.

c) Role-play the dialogue referring to the following:

A You ask your friend if he watched a talk-show last weekend. He happens not to like them, so you wonder about what he prefers doing at weekends.

B Your friend asks your opinion about the talk show you probably watched last weekend. But you hate talk-shows and the like. Tell him what you really like doing at weekends.
