Part 2 Your secret personality

Warm-up

  • Have you ever done magazine questionnaires or quizzes which allow you to learn more about yourself? If so, have their interpretations coincided with your vision of yourself?

  • Look at the list of words. Which of them are used to describe a person? In case you come across any of new words, first, look them up in the dictionary; second, put them down into your own vocabulary.

Now add up all the numbers: 4+1+9+7+2+9+6+5+5=48

Keep adding until you have just one number: 4+8=12; 1+2=3

  1. After you read about yourself match these people with their pictures by following the same procedure. The names are: Alice King, Gareth Jones, Cathy Parker, Simon West, Jane Lee, Alan Brown, Sally Frame, Peter Crisp, Anne Thorne.

1. Ones

Ones are the most confident and determined of all the numbers. They can do anything they want to. Ones hate people telling them what to do, but they like telling other people what they should do.

Twos are kind, shy, thoughtful and polite.

They love animals, reading and staying at home.

They usually feel really happy or sad.

. THREES

T

hrees are certainly not lazy. They always do their work on time and still have a lot of time for hobbies. They’re also honest, sensible, reliable and patient with other people.

4. FOURS

Fours are quick and clever, and they can make people laugh. They’re not shy about saying what they think, but people don’t always like what they say.

5. FIVES

F

ives are quicker than most people. They’re more intelligent too. They’re interested in lots of different things and they are very friendly. They love traveling and trying new things.

6. SIXES

Sixes are the happiest and the most optimistic of all numbers. They find something good even when things are bad. They’ve got plenty of friends, because they are so nice.

. SEVENS

Sevens are clever, serious and quiet and usually have one or two close friends. They like being alone. They don’t like noisy crowds and large groups of people. Sevens love animals and the countryside.

8. EIGHTS

Eights are sensible, reliable and nice. In fact they’re sometimes too kind to other people. They work hard and try hard in their hobbies.

9. NINES

Nines are smart and imaginative, but they’re sometimes lazy. They like having fun and they are fun to be with. People usually like nines a lot, but nines are not usually kind to other people.

  1. What adjectives, used to describe a person’s character you came across in the “number quiz”? Compare them with a list of words you made before.

  1. Divide following words into three groups: positive, negative and mixed features of the character. Discuss your choice with your partner.

Example: He’d been so confident of his success at the exam that he surprised everyone with a bad mark he received.

        6. My groupmate was so ______ before the performance that she had to take a sedative.

        7. The child is very ______! He says “thank you” whenever he gets something from his parents.

        8. It’s so difficult to guess your attitude to people. You’re more ______ than others.

        9. Most teenagers want to be ______ from their relatives.

        10. I wish you weren’t as ______ as that. People will eventually stop talking to you at all, fearing that they could offend you in some way.

        11. My cousin is such a ______!!! I’ve never met anyone more stupid than him.

        12. Our professor likes ______ students. They might ask you too much questions, but he says, such people always have an incentive to research and learn something new.

  1. SPEAKING

a) Think of a life-partner you would like to have. What kind of person you want him/her to be. Why? Which features of character are necessary and which are optional? Tell about your choice.

b) What kind of person would you definitely avoid dealing with? Why?

c) What traits reveal a looser and a winner? Do you think we are born with a certain set of features or we can change our nature?

Look at the adjectives you used in ex-s II and III. They can make their comparative and superlative degrees in 2 different ways.

  1. Write sentences as in the example comparing people from the “number quiz”.

  1. Compare your friend with yourself using these words: confident, happy, intelligent, slow, sportive, aggressive, boring, busy, friendly.

Ex.: I’m more confident than my friend, but he's happier than me.
