MY NATIVE PLACE

My native place is the place where I was born and where I live – the city of St. Petersburg. But I can also say that Luga, a small town not far from St. Petersburg, is also my native place because I have been spending there much time with my grandparents since I was born.

St. Petersburg is precious to me because it is a special city. First of all it is a real European city with beautiful architecture and interesting history. Every house, every square is a historical place, though the city isn’t very old. There are many museums and places of interest where one can spend much time. There are masterpieces of Russian and foreign artists one can see in museums. There are also places connected with folklore and national arts as the Museum of Ethnography. Generally speaking, the cultural life is very active in St. Petersburg, there are many concerts of pop, rock, folk singers, classical music and alternative music. Many groups and singers come from abroad.

But culture isn’t the only reason why I love my city. I like my city for its parks and gardens. There are many architectural ensembles which include a park or gardens, like the Summer Gardens, the Mars Field and Victory Park. I like to walk and see how nature changes from season to season. In our climate we enjoy four different seasons – a hot summer, a tender spring, a golden autumn and a freezing winter with snowfalls, skating and skiing. I especially like the pictures of autumn maples with their red, brown and golden leaves all over the ground. I love the Neva River, it looks different in every season, in every part of the day.

I also like St. Petersburg because it is a big city which gives many possibilities. There are many libraries and universities in it. There are many cinemas and theatres, many shops where one can buy almost anything. I must confess I like the noise of a big city, streets with thousands of lights, all the people hurrying here and there. That’s why I love St. Petersburg!

However, I love Luga not a bit less. It is a small town, where all people know each other, where you can’t get lost, where every stone and tree is a friend. People there are much friendlier than in a big city, everyone greets you in the street. I think life in Luga isn’t so quick as it is in a big city, but there is some charm in it. Nowhere to hurry. Though sometimes the life of a small town seems monotonous, it calms nerves. You know what to expect from the coming day, and it makes you sure in yourself and in life.

I can’t help telling a few words about nature. The landscapes there are really beautiful. Luga is surrounded by forests where every turn of a path gives you new impressions and feelings. The small rivers, the scenic banks of numerous lakes, so typical and at the same time so unique, attract many holiday makers. This is why Luga, my native place, is so important to me.
