Manchester is a city in Greater Manchester, England, with a population of 514,417. Manchester is in the south-central part of North West England. Metropolis is the third largest population in the UK, and the second after London British Cultural Arts Center. The city is located near the western slope Pennin on the river Ervell. Its importance as an important transportation hub increased in the late 19th century, with the opening of the Manchester Canal, which turned the city into a major seaport. At berths and along railways are industrial areas. Manchester, the first mention of which dates from the 10th century, there was a Celtic settlement in place Mansenion (Mancenion) and Roman fortified camp Mankunium (Mancunium), established in 79.
