Look for unusual conditions in chemical storage areas, such as:

•Leaking or deteriorating containers or drums (especially the steel made);

•Lack of information or warning sings;
•Absence of personal protective equipment in the areas of storage (including the sample lockers) ;

Any of the previously mentioned precautions should be corrected
immediately. Inspections of the chemical storage areas should be carried out on a routine basis. They will help to correct deficiencies and
prevent accidents.
Files containing MSDS for the cleaning chemicals should be
updated regularly.

Always use personal protective equipment when handling chemicals to avoid personal injuries no matter how small the container or chemical quantity may be.

We should remember that cleaning agents must be IMO approved and evaluated in accordance with requirements of Regulation 13.5.2 of Annex II of Marpol 73/78. This information could be find in annual MEPC.2 circular. Disposal of used cleaning chemicals should be in accordance with MARPOL Annex II.

It is very important that all spray or re-circulated solutions are quickly removed by an appropriate method of washing followed by mopping and drying. In cases where alcohols have been used, forced ventilation may be sufficient.
