It is Company Policy that all chemicals, paints, cleaning materials, etc are packaged and stored according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code.

All ships must maintain a file containing hazard data sheets for various

chemicals in use. All cleaning chemicals supplied in drums or containers must be checked to verify that they are correctly labeled. In case when slops collected in the drums, a clear label should indicate

content of the drum.

The labels must be in good condition, clearly readable, with all proper

hazard warnings and markings in place. Any containers or

packages that does not meet these requirements should not be accepted on board.

On occasions, vendors or contractors may supply with tank cleaning chemicals or solvents in used drums. In such situations the drums must not be accepted until they are correctly marked. Empty drums used by ship for storage of liquids must have old labels erased and remarked.

Such drums should be cleaned out from previous product to avoid any

reaction between incompatible chemicals.

According to IMDG Code and following the general principles:

Inflammable and toxic materials including the cargo samples must not

be stowed inside the accommodation, machinery or steering gear

compartments;

Basic rules for storing chemicals safety:

Segregate all incompatible chemicals for proper storage (including the cargo samples in the sample locker using a USCG Compatibility chart);

Flammable materials should be stored in an approved, dedicated rooms;

Chemicals in drums should be securely stored to avoid drums shifting;

Acid cargo samples should be stored in separate steel box or dedicated cabinet;
