Cargo Operations & Watch Keeping
Procedures for Safe Cargo Operations are contained within the VMS and in particular the Ship Specific Operating Procedures.
To follow and comply with procedures & implement Cargo Ops Policy, the Company’s aim is to:
•Provide for safe practices in cargo operations and a safe working environment
•Establish safeguards against all identified risks
•Continually improve the skills of personnel ashore and afloat including preparing for emergencies related to both safety & environmental protection

•Comply with all regulations, flag state and international law as well as industry codes, guidelines and best practice
•Ensure complete care of cargo from loading through to discharge
•Keep all personnel appraised of known or potential hazards relating to the cargo that may effect persons, the ship or the environment
•Ensure relevant personnel are suitably trained in relation to the cargo being handled and the cargo equipment used.

The Operations checklists fully embrace the Company's Instructions, Procedures and Documentation for the safe technical operation of the vessel, the safety of the crew, the cargo and the environment.

Checklists
Checklists are to be used when required, and whenever completed, a log entry is to be made which must include the checklist number, description and completing officer’s signature.
It is emphasised that the checklists are to assist the relevant Officer, and do not detract from his responsibility towards the safety of the vessel,
her crew, her cargo and the environment.
Responsibility & Watch Keeping
Section 2.0 of each Ship Specific Operating Procedures details the Responsibility of all officers involved with Cargo Responsibility & Duties aboard the Ships.
During operation of any vessel it is essential that good co-operation exists between all ranks on board.
The Job Descriptions contained in the Crew section of VMS provide detailed responsibilities during cargo operations.

Cargo Operations - Responsibilities
Chief Officer is responsible for:
•Cargo Planning, Cargo System checks, Preparation of Cargo & Ballast Ops, personal supervision during commencement and completion of Ops
•Operation and control of all Cargo Equipment.
•Written Standing Orders for Cargo Operations which are to be well understood and signed by each Deck Officer.
•Monitoring vessel’s stress and stability throughout Cargo/Ballast Ops/During.
•Maintaining Cargo Records required by Company/Charterers/Intl Regulations.
