Exercise 7. Translate the following simple sentences using the required form of the Oblique Mood.

1. Aх, если бы мы тогда знали всю правду! 2. Я бы предпочла об это не говорить. 3. Если бы не работа, он посмотрел бы всю пьесу. 4. Мы бы предпочли комнату побольше. 5. Если бы не случай, он бы провалил экзамен. 6. Лучше я не буду вмешиваться. 7. Я бы вам такого не посоветовала. 8. Если бы не акцент, никто бы и не подумал, что он иностранец. 9. Ах, если бы он был более последовательным. 10. Пусть кто-нибудь сообщит ей об этом. 11. Это не в моем характере распространять сплетни. 12. Достаточно сказать, что он не настолько глуп, как вы полагаете. 13. Я куплю это пальто, сколько бы оно ни стоило. 14. Будь что будет, но больше здесь оставаться я не намерен. 15. Будь я на вашем месте, я бы не колебался ни минуты. 21. Что бы вы мне посоветовали посмотреть в Лондоне? 22. Вам было бы лучше сменить прическу. 23. А что если он нас подведет? 24. А что, если кто-нибудь узнает? – Будь что будет! 25. Я скорее буду бедным, чем вором. 26. Кто-нибудь, помогите!!!

Exercise 8. Comment on the kind of clause and the Oblique Mood used in it:

  1. He would look such a fool in his own eyes if he gave in now.

  2. His neat shoes looked as though he had never worn them before.

  3. I wish you would persuade Uncle William to let me leave France.

  4. It’s bad enough that I should have lost all real contact with the children.

  5. Long live the Queen!

  6. I would rather you chose for yourself.

  7. He suggested that we should go to the cinema.

  8. It is high time he went to school.

  9. I would never have seen that place if I hadn’t been in Paris.

  10. I wish he had never been sent out.

  11. He stood looking at her as if she were some fairy.

  12. Somebody open the window!

  13. You had better keep out of sight until it’s all over.

  14. If only Rowley had come!

  15. But for her parents she wouldn’t have entered this university.

  16. Even if I weren’t married, it would be impossible for us to love one another.
