The Modal Verbs and Their Equivalents

Exercise 7.3

Translate the sentences with the modal verbs and their equivalents.

1. The USA could be importing 64% or more of the oil it uses by 2020.

2. Undiscovered oil that is thought to exist might add another 20-40 years to global oil supplies, probably at higher prices.

3. Scientists estimate that no more that 12-15% of the oil from a major spill can be recovered.

4. A well had to be drilled and then the crude oil could be pumped out.

Exercise 7.4

Сочетание модальных глаголов с Perfect Infinitive.

Модальные глаголы must, may, might в сочетании c Perfect Infinitive выражают возможность или вероятность действия, относящегося к прошлому, и обычно переводятся словами должно быть, возможно.

He may have got the article he needed. – Он, возможно, достал статью, которая была ему нужна.

Глаголы can, could в отрицательной форме в сочетании с Perfect Infinitive выражают сомнение в возможности совершения действия в прошлом и обычно переводятся: не может быть, чтобы …

He cannot have made such a serious mistake. – Не может быть, чтобы он сделал такую серьезную ошибку.

Глаголы ought to, should, could, might в сочетании с Perfect Infinitive указывают на то, что действие, которое могло или должно было совершиться, не совершилось.

Translate from Russian into English.

1. Нам следовало бы отказаться (to abandon) от расточительного использования невозобновляемых источников энергии и, возможно, перейти к энергосберегающим технологиям.

2. России не следовало бы продавать свои энергетические ресурсы другим странам.

3. Сейчас инженеры, должно быть, монтируют новую установку.

4. Вам не нужно было приобретать обогреватель для отопления помещения, вы могли бы сэкономить деньги и электроэнергию, устранив все возможные утечки тепла.

5. Замена стандартных лампочек накаливания флуоресцентными лампами могла бы сэкономить немало средств за время их эксплуатации.
